Members of Congress urged renaming of plant-based 'milk'
On December 16, a bipartisan group of 34 Members of Congress sent a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding policies for labeling plant-based products as "milk".  The letter expresses concern that using the term "milk" for plant-based products is misleading to consumers and harmful to the dairy industry.   In addition, the term "milk" carries the expectation of a certain level of nutritional value.  The nutritional profile of plant-based "milk" is not equivalent to the level of nutrition found in milk from animal sources.
The letter states that using the term "milk" violates the clear identity standard defined in the Code of Federal Regulations, which should make the marketing of plant-based products as "milk" illegal.  The representatives are urging FDA to require companies to use a more appropriate name before allowing for further marketing of the products.  The letter was met with strong support from the dairy industry.  A copy of the letter to FDA can be found here.

Solicitation of input from stakeholders regarding
food safety outreach program
A Federal Register Notice entitled "Solicitation of Input From Stakeholders Regarding the Food Safety Outreach Program" was published in the Federal Register on December 12, 2016.
As part of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture's (NIFA) strategy to successfully expand the Food Safety Outreach Program, NIFA will host a virtual listening session. The focus of the listening session is to gather stakeholder input to develop the priorities for the Request for Applications (RFA) in Fiscal Year (FY) 2018. NIFA is particularly interested in reaching the intended audience, achieving the most impact, and identifying suggested priorities in the third year of the Food Safety Outreach Program. The comment period ends on January 31, 2017.
Air bubbles may improve dairy products
Kansas State University food scientist Jayendra Amamcharla said his research team is perfecting a process to incorporate air bubbles into condensed milk and yogurt to make the texture of these products more desirable for consumers.

"The consumer trend is toward high-protein yogurt products," said Amamcharla, an assistant professor of animal sciences and industry. "One of the disadvantages of having higher proteins is that it increases the viscosity, or thickness, of the yogurt. It becomes so thick that you can eat it only with a spoon. We have incorporated air bubbles into a high-protein yogurt to reduce its viscosity so that it is drinkable."

The process developed by the Kansas State team is patent pending, but Amamcharla said that when ready, it will be fairly simple to implement for milk processing facilities.

Don't Miss an Issue of JDS
The  Journal of Dairy Science ® (JDS), one of our most visible member benefits is the top-ranked dairy research journal in the world. In 2015, the
Journal of Dairy Science  was ranked 1st by Eigenfactor  Score in the Agriculture, Dairy and Animal Science category. Eigenfactor  Score is a metric that uses citing journal data from the entire Journal Citation Reports® file to reflect the prestige and citation influence of journals by considering scholarly literature as a network of journal-to-journal relationships. Recent volumes of JDS have grown to include more than 800 manuscripts and 9,000 pages per year from authors worldwide.
The JDS is ranked 3rd in the Agriculture, Dairy and Animal Science category of the Journal Citation Reports® 2015, published by Thomson Reuters, with an Impact Factor of 2.408. The JDS 5-year Impact Factor (2.854) is also ranked 3rd in the Agriculture, Dairy and Animal Science category. The Journal has secured a top five journal ranking for fourteen straight years. JDS is also highly ranked in the Food Science and Technology category: 28 of 124 journals for Impact Factor and 29th of 124 journals for 5-year Impact Factor.
Members publishing in JDS receive a significant savings on page charges.  The current charge for members is $85 per printed page. If no authors are ADSA members, the publication charge is $140 per journal page.  The savings from just two (2) pages covers the cost of professional membership.  Under the new open access (OA) policy, authors may choose to pay the OA fee in lieu of standard page charges when author proofs are returned so that their paper becomes freely available upon publication in an online issue. The OA fee is $1750 if at least one author is a professional member of ADSA or $3500 if no authors are ADSA members. Open access articles will be freely accessible through the journal's web site ( http://www.journalofdairyscience.org/ ) at the time of publication. All other (non-OA) articles are freely available on www.journalofdairyscience.org/ 12 months after publication.
