Principal's Message
December 16, 2016
Dear Families and Friends of OLQP,
This time of year provides many opportunities for learning both inside and outside of the classroom: creative writing, experiencing the classics in literature, poetry, and music, as well as honing study skills. Students have written personal narratives and descriptive paragraphs. One exercise was for the little ones to write about how they would make the Grinch smile. Students are reading Dickens, Van Allsburg, Moore, and the Gospels of Luke and Matthew.  Reviews, note card sharing, and study partners filled the middle school hall as midterms progressed through the week. Learning is enriched by the season.
During this Advent season, the students have met the challenge to be Christ-like in many ways. On Monday, Fr. Carlos Martins brought the "Treasures of the Church" to OLQP. The children learned about what a relic is, the history of some of the saints, and how to show reverence appropriately. It was beautiful to behold as the students read the display cards that told about particular saints' lives and then paused to pray. In the midst of all the excitement and movement in the school, Marian Hall became a sanctuary of prayer. Students supported collections for Military Moms and Wives of Brazoria County and the St. Vincent de Paul food drive. Students have also been challenged to remember whose birthday is being celebrated on December 25 th . In that spirit, gift tags are covering the trees in the front entry of the school. The Christmas gift tags are labeled with the giver's name and what their gift is to Jesus. The gifts are acts of mercy and kindness.
From all of us at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic School to all of you, our families and friends, we wish you all of the blessings of the season as we keep you in our prayers and trust that you keep us in yours. Thank you for being part of the mission and ministry of OLQP.

OLQP Shining Stars
The Home and School Association does many wonderful things for our school. At both Christmas programs, volunteers gathered treats, decorated, set up, served, and then helped clean up! The association works with the staff on many such occasions to offer hospitality throughout the year. They also support teachers by making copies, lending extra hands during class projects, helping with lunch duty, and so much more. Hats off to this very generous group of dedicated volunteers!  Thank you!

December 5-11, 2016, is officially known as "Hour of Code" all over the world.   Jr. High students explored  the Tynker Hour of Code activities on the website  https://www.tynker.com/hour-of-code/ .  These activities are FREE; also free are 6 basic lessons for coding.  Tynker has activities for beginners, intermediate, and advanced levels in Kindergarten through 8th grade.  Debugger and Counter Hack have been popular activities.  Minecraft lovers can enjoy making mods with Tynker.  This might be something of interest for your children over the holidays!

First LEGO League (FLL) Robotics Competition
FIRST® LEGO® League, or FLL, introduces 9-14 year old students to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO robots to complete tasks on a playing surface. FLL teams discover exciting career possibilities and, through the process, learn to make positive contributions to society ( http://www.fllhouston.com/ ).  FLL robotics is an international competition.  The qualifying event was on Saturday, December 3rd, at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory.  The competition started at 8:00 am and ended at 5:00 pm.  The theme for this year's competition is Animal Allies. The competition consisted of four different sessions:
Robot Design Judging : the judges evaluated mechanical design, innovation, programming effectiveness, and team strategies for solving missions to assess overall design quality.
Core Values Judging: The students were given a task to perform in 10 minutes. The judges picked the teams that best demonstrated extraordinary enthusiasm and spirit, inspiration, exceptional partnership, and the utmost respect to its own teammates.
Robot Performance Judging:   recognized the teams that scored the most points during the Robot Game.  Teams had a chance to compete in at least three, 2.5-minute matches and their highest score counts.
Research Project Presentation Judging Judges looked for teams whose quality research, innovative solutions, community sharing and presentation best reflect an in-depth understanding of the scientific disciplines involved with the Project.
