We've had a busy few weeks in CMC, with many wonderful events and projects happening. Here's a brief summary of what we've been up to in July, as well as a preview of contemporary music events happening in August!

MICHAEL GALLEN RECEIVES DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL MUSIC BURSARY  

Composer Michael Gallen has been awarded the 2017 Dublin City Council Music Bursary, which is awarded annually in support of studies at an advanced level or the development of work/professional skills.  2017 has been a busy year for Gallen and has seen him delve into the worlds of dance and opera. His collaboration with Company Philip Connaughton's dance-opera Extraterrestrial Events premiered at Dublin Dance Festival in May to critical acclaim and more recently his piece Yellow, a contemporary work-in-progress for two dancers and two musicians was presented in two sold out performances at Cork Midsummer Festival. RECORDING NEW MUSIC 

In this special feature, journalist Michael Quinn writes about the current state of the new music recording scene in Ireland and speaks to label owners and composers Benedict Schlepper-Connolly, Nick Roth and Roger Doyle about some of the challenges and opportunities which it faces. Read more.

RAYMOND DEANE ON HIS NEW STRING QUARTETS  

  Raymond Deane's f ifth string quartet with soprano Sylvia O'Brien is premiered in Achill on 12 August, and is followed by the premiere and tour of another new quartet by the RTÉ ConTempo quartet this autumn. This month the composer spoke to CMC about these new works and some of his other current projects. Read more.

DONNACHA DENNEHY SPEAKS ABOUT HIS LATEST OPERA THE SECOND VIOLINIST

Irish composer Donnacha Dennehy spoke to CMC about his latest opera with Enda Walsh,  The Second Violinist, which premiered last month to critical acclaim at the Galway International Arts Festival. Listen here.

Upcoming events in August 
WORLD PREMIERE OF ANTARCTICA BY LINDA BUCKLEY AT THE KILKENNY ARTS FESTIVAL 
Monday 14 August 2017, 6pm (premiere) and 8.30pm, The Brewhouse
Abbey Creative Quarter,  4 Water Gate,  Kilkenny

Last year, composer Linda Buckley and uilleann piper  David Power presented  Uilleann Goes Electric, the first fruits of a groundbreaking new collaboration. Building on this, Buckley and Power return to the Kilkenny Arts Festival this year to present a new collaborative work,  Antarctica. Drawing inspiration from the early Antarctic expeditions, Antarctica is a multimedia performance combining Buckley's hypnotic electronic score with live uilleann pipes, performed against film footage of those early explorations.
