From Mr. Robinson

Dear Boulevard Families,

As we begin Winter Recess, I want to take a moment to thank all of you for your ongoing support of  Boulevard Elementary. The collaborative spirit and support of the Boulevard community helps to  maintain the excellent education our children experience on a daily basis. Yesterday’s delicious staff
appreciation breakfast is just the latest demonstration of how you care for our amazing teachers, and,  on behalf of all of them, I sincerely thank you!

I do have a favor to ask. During Winter Recess, please encourage your children to read each and every  day. If possible, model reading and read with them. The benefits for your children are priceless.

Wishing you a happy, healthy Winter Recess! Classes resume Tuesday, January 3.

Sincerely,
Neal Robinson

Our Feature Country: Dominican Republic

Hola! Our spotlighted country of this week is Dominican Republic. This Central American island country is located in the Caribbean Sea and has a population of more than 9 million people. The Dominican Republic is a country sharing the island of Hispaniola with the nation of Haiti. The official language is Spanish although there is a Dominican dialect which has some different words from mainland Spain. Merengue, a popular style of music and dance in the country, is a mixture of African and Hispanic traditions. The most popular sport is baseball. Tourism is a major part of the economy. Severe storms can be experienced in the country between June and October.

Parents, I want to remind you that there is a collection of books in international languages available in the ELL room. This is called the World Languages Lending library. If you would like to borrow books or other material, please email  Jill Lasheen. Reading is a great way to strengthen literacy. Also, the better a person knows their 1st language, the easier it is to learn a 2nd language.

Please see Our International Community website at the link hereThere are many website links to aid children in learning English.

Family Volunteering Opportunity - MLK Day

All Shaker families are invited to join the Shaker Schools Community Builders for a day of service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (1/16/17) from 10am-12pm at Shaker Heights High School.  Students in grades K-4 and their families will be making fleece tie blankets for the homeless community in Northeast Ohio.   Click here for more details and registration will be available after winter break.  We are currently collecting donations to purchase fleece and supplies for this project - - a $10 donation purchases supplies for one blanket.
