Our second annual conference inspired and energized members for a productive 2017, both as a forum for exploring new ways to achieve "smart infrastructure, strong communities" and also as a celebration of committee accomplishments and member commitments to action.

Conference Highlights:


Jersey Water Works  has been selected as a winner of the 2016  Governor's Environmental Excellence Award   in the Water Resources category.  The awards honor and recognize individuals, businesses, educators, institutions, communities, youth and others who have made significant contributions to environmental protection in New Jersey. To date, 140 award winners have been recognized since the program began in 2000. Steering Committee Co-Chair Jane Kenny, fourth from right above, accepted the award on behalf of the collaborative at a ceremony on Dec. 7, and was joined by Steering Committee members Dan Kennedy, far left, Daniel Van Abs, third from right, and David Zimmer, far right, as well as Chris Sturm, third from left, and Jane Rosenblatt, second from right, from New Jersey Future.

The Governor's Environmental Excellence Award was also awarded to the River-Friendly Programs of the Raritan Basin, a joint initiative of the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association**Raritan Headwaters Association a nd  New Jersey Water Supply Authority.** The New Jersey Water Environment Association was also recognized in the Water Resource category for providing 50,000 hours of training to the environmental community. Committee Spotlight: Green infrastructure Committee

The Jersey Water Works Green Infrastructure Committee has released recommendations for designing new parks and public spaces with green infrastructure to manage stormwater.

This white paper recommends ways for the NJ Green Acres program to allow green stormwater infrastructure in existing parks. To prepare, the committee sought and received input from JWW members and the state's leading conservation organizations.  

Legislative Update

Legislative Task Force on Drinking Water Hears from Jersey Water Works Members

The Joint Legislative Task Force on Drinking Water Infrastructure met on Wednesday, Nov. 30, to hear testimony on the current condition of the state's drinking water infrastructure and what improvements are necessary to ensure a safe drinking water supply.

Former New Jersey Gov. Jim Florio, honorary co-chair of Jersey Water Works, kicked off the hearing.  Several Jersey Water Works members and Steering  Committee members were among those testifying:
  • Margaret Waldock* and Chris Sturm ( testimony ), representing Jersey Water Works
  • Daniel Van Abs* ( testimony ) of Rutgers University
  • Andrew Hendry* ( testimony ) and Robert Brabston** of the New Jersey Utilities Association
  • Peggy Gallos *( testimony ) of the Association of Environmental Authorities of New Jersey
  • Joan Matthews** ( testimony ) of the National Resources Defense Council, on behalf of Larry Levine*
  • David Pringle  of Clean Water Action
  • Steve Blankenship , Mike Furrey and Chris Andreason ( testimony ) of the American Water Works Association New Jersey Chapter
  • Michael Maloney ( testimony ) of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union

The next hearing will be today, Dec. 14 at the State House Annex in Trenton, Committee Room 11 . U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ6) will be among those testifying  as will Jersey Water Works ex-officio non-voting Steering Committee members Daniel Kennedy of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and David Zimmer of the New Jersey  Environmental Infrastructure Trust, which provides grants and low-interest loans for qualified local government units and eligible public water systems.

When a Band-aid Is Not Enough
American Rivers has tools available to help public utility managers communicate about stormwater management and assist them in fostering public support for collecting fees to upgrade and/or maintain water infrastructure.

The exchange is a new practitioner network  that supports, via accelerating peer learning, innovation and implementation, managers of public green infrastructure programs seeking to adopt and grow green stormwater infrastructure programs.

Water system managers and decision-makers in particular will benefit from this workshop presented by the Southwest Environmental Finance Center, AWWA New Jersey and the American Water Works Association.

Funding Opportunity and Award Programs
 
This EPA program offers  $2.5 million nationwide for diverse local partnerships  to improve water quality, watersheds and the species and habitats they support. Proposals are due Jan. 31, 2017.
