The USHJA Annual Meeting is for YOU
Please join us at this year's USHJA Annual Meeting, December 10-14, for educational sessions and networking with your peers outside of the horse show environment, and to celebrate the accomplishments of your peers, learn about new programs and opportunities in the sport, join in the discussion about rule change proposals, and share your feedback on what's working and what's not in our sport. The multi-day conference is THE destination for professionals to participate in the governance of our sport and hear first hand from the Association's leadership.

This is a great year to come if you've been to every Annual Meeting or have never been to one. We have negotiated discounts with airlines and rental car companies to help make the trip affordable and simple for you, and you're sure to enjoy San Antonio, Texas!

The USHJA hotel room block closes on Nov. 13, so reserve your room soon to ensure the discounted room rate. Check out the schedule and r egister by Nov. 15 to enjoy the Early Bird Registration .

We look forward to seeing you there!

Great Incentives for More Green Hunters
Announced earlier this year for 2018, the USHJA Green Hunter Incentive Program and Championship will expand to the 3'6" and 3'9" Green Hunter sections. The purpose of expanding this program is to take the success of the incentive program at the 3'0" and 3'3" fence heights and offer it to horses competing at the 3'6 and 3'9" fence heights.

Green Hunter Incentive class fence heights may only be combined as a 3'0"/3'3" section and a 3'6"/3'9" section. All four fence heights may not be combined under any circumstance.  The 2018 Green Hunter Incentive Championships will feature two Championship sections: one for horses competing at 3'0" and 3'3" and one for horses competing at 3'6" and 3'9". The format for each will follow the successful format of the prior years' Championship, and riders will be able to earn prize money and awards by tiers.

Know Before You Show: New Rules for a New Competition Year
Do you know the important rule changes that will be effective Dec. 1, 2017, for the 2018 competition year and affect Hunter/Jumper competition? Please take the time to review these important updates that were developed with horse and rider well-being and safety, fairness of play, and enhancing the competitive experience in mind. Click here for a comprehensive list of rule changes that were approved in early 2017 and will take effect for the 2018 competition year. View the entire 2018 USEF Rulebook here.

Phase I of Microchipping Rule Takes Effect
Dec. 1, 2017
Phase I: Beginning Dec. 1, 2017, horses competing in classes that require a USHJA Horse Registration will be required to be microchipped to receive points.

Phase II: For the following competition year (2019), all horses that are competing in classes which require USHJA registration must be microchipped or will be ineligible to compete in Federation licensed competitions.

Confused about Age Verification?
For the 2018 competition year, horses competing in Young Hunter classes and Jumper classes restricted by the age of the horse must have their age verified by USEF prior to competing at a USEF licensed competition.

Don't know which format of verification your horse is eligible for?

Enhancements to the USHJA International Hunter Derby Coming in 2018
The USHJA International Hunter Derby program will add two new components for the 2018 competition year: a star ranking system and a new format option called the Derby Hunt and Go.

Star Ranking System
Designed to categorize d erbies into three levels, the Star Ranking System will start at a One Star and going up to a Three Star Derby. Fence heights and minimum prize money offered will vary based on the star ranking, with more prize money (minimum of $100,000) and higher fence height options (up to 4'-4'9") for Three-Star Derbies.

Derby Hunt and Go
The Derby Hunt and Go offers riders the Derby experience in a shortened format. In the Hunt and Go, exhibitors will complete a typical Classic Hunter Round and then immediately begin a Handy Hunter Round without exiting the arena. Competition managers will have the option of adding an additional, separate Handy Round, which would bring the top 4-6 horses for a final round.

Longeing can be a wonderful training tool for rider and horse if used in an appropriate manner with correct equipment and in a safe and secure location. It is also important for trainers to teach and enforce proper longeing techniques employed by their staff, both at home and at competitions.  This short educational video, created as part of the USHJA Horse and Rider Advocates Committee Horse Health and Wellness Series, provides guidance on appropriate longeing techniques.
