NSDTA Conference
Savannah, Georgia

A group of OCWTP staff and trainers attended the NSDTA Conference this year! We were all very engaged in the opportunities to learn new ideas and new techniques for effective training and development of staff and caregivers. We also met folks from throughout the country who are responsible for training and development in different human services environments. Our very own Eddie Lebron presented two workshops at the conference,  Surviving Stress and Burnout: A Trainer's Perspective and
"Shadow Box": A Different Approach for Critical Thinking and Decision-Making Skill Development.

Arlene Jones went to the NSDTA Conference. Here is what she had to say about it:

Attending the 2017 NSDTA Conference will be one of my most treasured professional experiences. Having the opportunity to learn about how the brain creates and stores memories has definitely enhanced how I approach transfer of learning activities as a trainer. Also, the science behind microburst learning as both a part of curriculum design and engagement tool provided insight that improved my skills as a web- based trainer. Overall, the conference was amazing, I networked with people from across the nation and unlocked my untapped potential.  am really looking forward to NSDTA's 2018 Conference in Columbus, OH!

Staff Retirement:

Julia Harris, former CORTC Director, (2009-2013) and Franklin County Children Services (FCCS) Manager, and Director, retired after 32 years of service at FCCS on October 27, 2017. New Staff
  • Nefertiti McKinney joined us late in 2016.  She came  from Cuyahoga DSAS training department, and has been a great addition.  She covers both caregiver and staff classes.  She does technical training on the Microsoft Office Suite for staff in Cuyahoga County as well.
  • Katrina Leonard-Pritchett joined our department in early 2017.  She was a caseworker at Cuyahoga DCFS for more than 20 years.  She also supports staff and caregiver training, but her main focus is program support for Cuyahoga County UPP/Field Supervision.
  • Tanya Washington is joining the staff in November. She has nearly a decade of casework experience.  She will work primarily on the staff side and help in trainer/training development.

NCORTC is moving soon!

NCORTC is planning to move to a new location at the end of November.  We will be headquartered at Cuyahoga County's Westshore Building, located at 9830 Lorain Avenue.  We will likely not offer training in that location until 2018, as we don't want to change previously published calendars.

Northeast Ohio Regional Training Center

On Friday, October 27, 2017 China Darrington was awarded NEORTC 2017 Trainer of the Year at Furnace Run Park in Richfield, Ohio at NEORTC's 27th Annual Fall Retreat.  China joins a long list of esteemed trainers who have won this award, including Denise Goodman, Cyndi King, Jim Still-Pepper and others over the past 27 years.  It was a beautiful, mild, sunny day for NEORTC liaisons and other OCWTP partners to gather for an informational meeting, lunch, and training provided by China Darrington.  NEORTC staff (pictured) presented China with her award.  NEORTC hopes for continued collaboration with China in the future, particularly in the area of distance learning.

IHS Welcomes...

Marsha Rose Wickliffe
joined the IHS Trainer Development staff in September. She spent almost three decades serving low-income children, youth and families at the local, state, and national level.  She served as a Staff Attorney/Adjunct Professor representing youth aging-out of-foster care.  Her most challenging work was leading a group of child welfare trainers to identify and address systemic issues of racial disproportionality and disparity in public child welfare agencies.
Marsha's greatest aspiration is to make her parents and three brothers proud of her.  Her greatest joy is her teenage daughter, Sa'raai Rose Wickliffe.

Christy Mayle joined the IHS Trainer Development staff in October. She
graduated from Ohio University in 2005 with a Bachelor's Degree in Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences.  She started working for Franklin County Children Services in October of 2005 in the Data Management department.  She joined the CORTC in August 2008 as the Staff Training Secretary and moved to the E-Track Liaison position with the CORTC in 2010.

Memorial Tribute

Charlotte M. Osterman, MSW, LISW
(1951-2017)

By: Leslie Ahmadi

On August 15, 2017, OCWTP and the child welfare profession lost (to cancer) one of its fiercest, finest, most committed, and most loving champions on behalf of permanency: Ms. Charlotte M. Osterman. A training manager, mentor/trainer, and curriculum developer with OCWTP for the past twelve years, she gleaned the best of her knowledge and life experience, infused her passion and singularity-then with unflinching resolve and her many "hats," went quietly about her business, transforming lives.
