Water Beads a Serious Risk to Children
[Source:  Medical News Today]

Parents are being warned of the risks posed to children by water beads, which have been increasingly marketed as toys and learning aids for children with autism.

The water-absorbing beads made from superabsorbent polymer can swell to 400 times their original size when immersed, causing a foreign body risk that can obstruct the gastrointestinal tract.

In a short report published online by the Medical Journal of Australia, senior poisons specialist Dr Rose Cairns, of the NSW Poisons Information Centre at Westmead Children's Hospital, and her colleagues identified a rapid increase in incidents in recent years involving the ingestion of water-absorbing beads.

Creative Activities Can Boost Well-Being in Young Adults
[Source:  Psych Central]

Everyday creative activity may lead to an "upward spiral" of increased well-being and creativity in young adults, according to new research.

For the study, researchers from the Department of Psychology at New Zealand's University of Otago asked 658 university students to keep a daily diary of their experiences and emotional states over 13 days.

Toddler Robots Help Solve How Children Learn
[Source:  Science Daily]

This suggests that early learning is based not on conscious thought but on an automatic ability to associate objects which enables babies to quickly make sense of their environment.
Dr Katie Twomey from Lancaster University, with Dr Jessica Horst from Sussex University, Dr Anthony Morse and Professor Angelo Cangelosi from Plymouth wanted to find out how young children learn new words for the first time. They programmed a humanoid robot called iCub designed to have similar proportions to a three year old child, using simple software which enabled the robot to hear

How Kids' Brains Respond to a Late Night Up
[Source:  Science Daily]

Any parent can tell you about the consequences of their child not getting enough sleep. But there is far less known about the details of how sleep deprivation affects children's brains and what this means for early brain development.

"The process of sleep may be involved in brain 'wiring' in childhood and thus affect brain maturation," explains Salome Kurth, first author of the study published in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, and a researcher at the University Hospital of Zurich. "This research shows an increase in sleep need in posterior brain regions in children."

Kids' Appropriate Use of Words Improve Spatial Skills
[Source:  Psych Central]

As our world becomes more technical, preparing students for success often means improving their spatial skills. Paradoxically, new research suggests the training should begin with the way children use words.

Hilary Miller, a University of Wisconsin, Madison graduate student studying child development, explains that it's not how many words a kid knows, it's how they choose them.

Preschoolers' Expectations Shape How they Interpret Speech
[Source: Science Daily]

When we listen to people speak, we aren't just hearing the sounds they're making, we're also actively trying to infer what they're going to say. Someone might misspeak, forget a word, or be drowned out by background noise, and yet we often get their meaning anyway. This is because we use our past experience with language to hear what we expect them to say. Adults tend to manage this kind of "noisy channel" communication fairly easily, but new findings suggest 4- and 5-year-old children show the same adaptive ability.

I teach at a church preschool where all the children celebrate Christmas, needless to say; we do a lot of Christmas themed activities in the last month of the year. However, this is really the first time I have been in a school where we celebrated one holiday tradition so obviously.

I know that many of you do not celebrate Christmas in your home or classroom and I have been trying to find crafts that are winter

Pediatric Tx Corner:  Is Visual Learning Really A Thing?
[Source:  Mind Shift]

It's common to hear people say, "I'm a visual learner," but research does not support the idea that learning styles like visual or auditory learning are inherent traits. That doesn't mean learners don't have preferences, but only one flawed study found that people actually learned better when information was presented in their preferred style. Instead, it seems that most people learn the best when information is presented in multiple ways, especially when one of them is visual.
