Dear Families and Friends of OLQP:
I grew up knowing about Our Lady of Fatima. For my parents' generation, the impact was very real and historical. A priest, Father Peyton, started the Rosary League and the motto, "The family that prays together, stays together." It was not uncommon for families to pray the rosary together every night. You can search for Fr. Peyton and learn more about this movement inspired by Fatima. There are videos on YouTube of Hollywood elite praying the rosary. This was a time when Hollywood programs were sensitive to Christian morality. There were strict rules about what could be shown on television especially during the "family hours." Things have changed dramatically just within my lifetime.
I recently went on retreat. The priest opened the day of reflection by recounting historical information about Our Lady of Fatima. He shared that he knew nothing of it growing up. He only learned about the events as the result of a research topic he stumbled upon when he was in college. How many generations of Catholics have not even heard of this event? It has been approved by the Church. John Paul II attributed his survival of the assassination attempt to the intercession of Our Lady of Fatima. There are today many organizations that promote the message of Our Lady of Fatima.
Last Friday, the preparation for the anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima culminated in the celebration of Mass and consecration of our school and our families to Blessed Mother. The message of Fatima is much needed today: Pray the rosary and receive the sacraments. It is from those founts that we are given the grace, strength, and wisdom to bear Christian witness in our families and in this society.
The students at OLQP are well on their way to doing just that. Thank you for being part of the mission and ministry of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic School.
Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,
Mrs. Marianne Mechura, M.Ed.
