Early Fall Color
It's starting early this year. Have you noticed as you drive down the road or perhaps in your own yard, the landscape is changing early this year. Due to the excessive moisture we had in July and the cooler weather we have experienced through August, we are now seeing deciduous trees and shrubs starting to turn to their fall colors.

"I've noticed Grow Low Sumac and some Maple trees already starting to change. The leaves of our False Indigo are already dropping."

Why does this happen? Trees sense the loss of light, even as little as a half an hour a day. When this happens they undergo chemical and physical changes that produce the beautiful autumn hues we see.
Marcy L Cronin
Trees produce chlorophyll and continue to do so from spring through summer keeping their leaves green. Once the days get shorter the tre es slow down their production of chlorophyll, the process of photosynthesis slows and the trees and shrubs store their energy to their strongest parts - bark, trunk and branches so they stay strong for their winter dormancy.

Signs of Fall are all around us, children are back to school, leaves are changing, days are getting shorter and we are spending more time indoors.

Swamp Milk Weed in our perennial department have been hosting happy places for Monarch Caterpillars to become chrysalis!
"It has been exciting to check under and around the leaves of many of the perennials this time of year. The Monarchs have found happy homes on our native Swamp Milk Weed as well as other perennials. This is the final generation that will be migrating!" said Sue Rancak, Master Gardener and Sales Associate at Countryside

You may remember this spring, Kim Troug from our Landscape Department conducted a seminar on Straw Bale Gardening.
With fall being a time to harvest we thought it would be fun to update you on the progress of her straw bale gardens.
Look how they've grown!
She planted six bales and the vegetation is enormous and healthy. Everything is bearing good fruit! She has white pumpkins, cucumbers, butternut squash regular pumpkins and watermelon. No pests, one small area of powdery mildew. Overall, a very healthy garden!
Did you try your hand at it too? How did your straw bale gardens turn out? We would love to see some of them! Feel free to email your pictures to us so we can share them on our website and facebook page.
