A Message from the Dean...

Servant Queen and the King she serves
"Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your
well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords. . ."  Sunday Collect

In many Episcopal churches, this Sunday is known as The Feast of Christ the King. The name is not written on any of our liturgical calendars, not official, but  present in the church nonetheless. The "Feast of Christ the King" has its origins in the modern Roman Catholic Church. It was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 following World War I. He connected the denial of Christ as king to the rise of secularism. At the time many Christians (including Catholics) began to doubt Christ's authority and existence. This doubt led to the rise of non-Christian dictatorships in Europe, and he saw Catholics being taken in by these earthly leaders.
The Feast of Christ the King stands in stark contrast to two current trends in Christian circles. One is an egalitarian trend to eschew all honorific titles, such as "king" or "Lord" or "Father so-and-so." The other trend is a sense that calling Jesus "King" or "Lord" is both triumphalistic and patriarchal and flotsam and jetsam of a(happily) long gone age.
Rather than address those explicit concerns, I will instead give you an example of a prominent figure who, I think, has got it right-Queen Elizabeth. A new book written in honor of her 90th birthday, "Servant Queen and the King She Serves," tells her story and includes much insight into the faith that sustains her. Here are some quotes of this Queen of England who serves a King:
  •  "For me, the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, whose birth we celebrate today, is an inspiration and an anchor in my life. A role-model of reconciliation and forgiveness, he stretched out his hands in love, acceptance and healing. Christ's example has taught me to seek to respect and value all people of whatever faith or none."
  •  "To many of us our beliefs are of fundamental importance. For me the teachings of Christ and my own personal accountability before God provide a framework in which I try to lead my life. I, like so many of you, have drawn great comfort in difficult times from Christ's words and example."
  •  "Forgiveness lies at the heart of the Christian faith. It can heal broken families, it can restore friendships and it can reconcile divided communities. It is in forgiveness that we feel the power of God's love."
  • "This is the time of year when we remember that God sent his only son 'to serve, not to be served'. He restored love and service to the centre of our lives in the person of Jesus Christ."

A Letter From Bishop Sumner...

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Greetings in Christ. As you know, Deacon Pam Dunbar will be retiring December 31, 2016. Deacon Pam has served the youth in this diocese for many years faithfully.

We have had many inquiries about a "Purse" for her and how one might contribute to that purse. If you, your congregation, or a member of your congregation would like to make such a gift simply send your check made out to the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas designated for "Pam's Purse".  Mark your envelope "Pam's Purse".  Deadline is November 30.   If you would like, you may send a gift directly to her.

We look forward to an opportunity to thank her on December 6, with a reception from 4:00-6:00 at the Diocesan Office.  Please RSVP Kim LaNore at [email protected] or 214-826-8310 by November 30 if you are attending reception.

Gifts for the "Purse" are not tax deductible.  We will present to Deacon Pam at her reception on December 6.  If you have any questions please call, 214-826-8310.

Peace,

+George
Bishop of Dallas
