HC DrugFree Empowering The Community

HC DrugFree's program, "Not My Child...Yes, Your Child," presented in partnership with Marriotts Ridge High School PTSA and Mount View Middle School PTA, will be held on Thursday, October 19 at 7:00 pm in the Marriotts Ridge High School auditorium. This event is free and open to high school and middle school parents, grandparents, family members, and any adults working with teens who think their children will never get involved with drugs and those who are already suspicious or dealing with a child's experimentation! Hear facts, strategies, experiences and encouragement and get your questions answered by HC DrugFree and its community partners, as well as parents and others with stories to share. To understand the importance of attending this event, view HC DrugFree's video at https://vimeo.com/231604408. For more information, contact HC DrugFree at 443-325-0040, [email protected], or visit www.hcdrugfree.org.

HC DrugFree'sConvenient Drive-Thru "Sharps"* and Medication Collection will be held on Saturday, October 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Wilde Lake Village Center parking lot near The UPS Store and Slayton House.*(Sharps: needles, syringes and EpiPens)
Looking to get rid of old, unwanted, or recalled EpiPens, needles, syringes and medications all in one quick trip without getting out of your vehicle? Join your friends at HC DrugFree's quick and convenient drive-thru collection held twice a year. Just look for volunteers directing traffic around the parking lot. Howard County Police will receive and secure your medications for proper disposal and medical staff will handle your sharps for proper recycling.
Parents and grandparents, are you your child's drug dealer? Will your child's first experimentation be with legally prescribed pain medication found in your home? Keep medications away from your children (and adults visiting or working in your home). Three out of four people using heroin began with the use of prescription medication found in their own home or the home of a family member or friend. Be sure to secure your medications to keep them out of the hands of everyone for whom they are not prescribed. To further understand the importance of this event, view HC DrugFree's video at https://vimeo.com/231604408.

For more information about this event or to learn how to safely store or dispose of medications throughout the year, visit the Events-Take Back Day page at www.hcdrugfree.org or contact HC DrugFree at 443-325-0040 or [email protected].

Beech Creek Drive Storm-water Quality Improvements To Begin

Beech Creek Drive stormwater quality improvements to begin

ELLICOTT CITY, MD - A Howard County construction project to improve a storm water  management retention pond on Beech Creek Drive in the vicinity of Olde Woods Way in Columbia is expected to begin on or about Monday, October 30. The project will remove and replace three metal riser structures and metal spillway pipes with a concrete weir structure to control flow from the pond. Riprap stone  will be installed at the pond's outfall for erosion control. The pond will  be deepened to provide additional water quality treatment.  Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by late February 2018.

Signs will be posted near the site to advise motorists and pedestrians of the construction. A portion of the northbound lane of Beech Creek Drive near the work site will be closed during construction hours, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Flagging operations will be in place to direct traffic as needed.

The sidewalk along Beech Creek Drive adjacent to the pond will be closed for the duration of the project. A temporary pedestrian path will be provided on the opposite side of the roadway. Additionally, a 160-foot portion of the pedestrian path near the north entrance of Cedar Lane Park between the basketball court and the County Park building will be closed during construction.

This project is funded through the County's Watershed Protection and Restoration Fund.
