Regarding Ruling Elders: Responding Faithfully
As the events of our world seem to swirl into chaos, a question I've heard for months: "How do you cope with the news these days?
I know that what I fear most in this world is the death of goodness, or God-ness. And there are times I just want to put my head down and weep. Sometimes I do. Since Jesus wept over Jerusalem, sometimes I think God weeps with me, too.
But what does not seem helpful is letting depression, frustration, or despair immobilize me. I'm not good for anyone that way, let alone God or myself when I am like this.
I am learning, as we all are, my own path of resilience in this time in our beleaguered, beloved world. What follows is just one way I have of helping me to get my bearings so that I can respond in more helpful and Christ-like ways.

From the Stated Clerk...
Mid-Council Leaders' Gathering in St. Louis

Last weekend saw hundreds of presbytery leaders (executives, stated clerks, moderators-elect, program staff) from across the country gather in St. Louis, MO, for the annual training event.  Transylvania was represented by David Hoskins (moderator-elect), Philip Lotspeich (executive) and Jerry Utt (stated clerk).  The event began with worship and moved on to workshops and plenary presentations from leaders of the various agencies of the church.  Attendees heard the plans for the 223 rd General Assembly to be held in St. Louis next June.  Sunday's worship service included an offering, and thousands of dollars were given to support the relief effort in Puerto Rico, and to assist Giddings-Lovejoy (the host presbytery) in its mission outreach efforts.

We have a great opportunity to be part of the next General Assembly.  If you've signed up for pc-biz ( www.pc-biz.org the online component of GA), you can see and read the proposed overtures as they come in.  Right now, there are 8 or 9 overtures proposed by the presbyteries, and there will be more as the deadlines (February, April, and May) approach for business items.   Another opportunity is to witness the work of the larger church in action.  St. Louis isn't that far away, and anyone can register and attend the meetings.  The opening worship is always moving and powerful, as thousands of Presbyterians and ecumenical representatives gather in worship and praise.  It's really something.  Make a weekend of it and attend the opening worship, observe the moderator's election, meet new and old friends from across the church.  We'll share items in the newsletter as they become available or check out the GA website for more information.   (You can also check different social media sources: Facebook (Spirit of GA), Twitter, etc for GA news and updates.)
APCE Registration
It is time to register for the Annual Event for the Association of Presbyterian Church Educators.  Registration is on-line at  http://www.apcenet.org/.  Early bird registration ends December 8, but popular workshops fill up quickly, so don't wait!

This event is in our APCE Region (Mid-South) and we have some scholarship funds available.  Our region's president, Doodle Harris, can be contacted about financial assistance.

There are great workshops for all who engage in education, youth ministry, planning worship and more.  The theme is Deep & Wide - Boundless Hospitality, and this will be part of every workshop. People interested in curriculum have an opportunity to attend POINT training (each Presbytery can send two) to learn about new curriculum, and in particular our new Confirmation materials coming out in 2018. And there is much much more!
