Hello!

It's hard to believe that we're only a couple of weeks away from the end of the
14-week term! I hope you're finding these newsletters helpful. If there is anything else you'd like me to include, please let me know.

Academic Information

Friday, Dec.16, is the end of the 14-week term. Most students will have multiple exams and projects due the week of Dec. 12. A special note of encouragement from you would surely be appreciated.

Residence halls remain open during all academic break periods. However, services (front desk hours, CA availability, etc.) will be limited from Saturday, Dec. 17 through Sunday, Jan. 1. Normal residence hall services resume Monday, Jan. 2.

Students can check their grades in TitanWeb beginning on Dec. 23. Here are some definitions you might find helpful:
  • Dean's List: A student who has completed at least 12 credits (not including Pass/Fail courses) during that term and has a term Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.75 or better, with no individual term course grade below a "C," no grade of "I" incomplete, and no non-reported grades at the time the process is run, is placed on the Dean's List.
  • Honor Roll: A student who has completed at least 12 credits (not including Pass/Fail courses) during that term and has a term GPA of 3.30 or better, with no individual course grade below "C," no grades of "I" incomplete, and no non-reported grades at the time the process is run, is placed on the University Honor Roll.
  • Good Academic Standing: A student with a GPA of 2.0 or higher is considered in good academic standing.
  • Academic Probation: A student with an official GPA below 2.0 is on academic probation. If a student is on academic probation for three consecutive semesters, he or she will be suspended from the university.
  • Academic Suspension: A student with an official GPA below 1.0 is placed on academic suspension. First Year students who are suspended are encouraged to appeal to return in spring. We will work with the student to develop a plan for success.
  • Probation and Suspension notices with appeal information and deadlines will be sent to students by email the week of Dec. 28.
Selected Upcoming Events

Dec. 2: De-Stress Fest after Dark, 7-10 p.m. in Reeve Union
After entering college, many students find that fellow students are more motivated, instructors are more demanding, the work is more difficult, and students are expected to be much more independent. As a result of these new demands, it is common for college students to experience greater levels of stress related to academics.

Similar to national data, UW Oshkosh students report stress and anxiety as the top two factors that negatively impact their academic performance. In response to the growing need for stress management skills, the Student Health Center and United Students in Residence Halls (USRH) envisioned a large "de-stress" event open to all students, staff  and their guests.

The purpose of this free event is to provide stress-relieving activities for students prior to finals. We will have a variety of activities, including massage therapists, stress-ball making, therapy dogs, painting, coloring, mug decorating, bingo, a scavenger hunt and a photo booth. There will be catered hors d'oeuvres all night and hundreds of prizes. The goal is to encourage healthy stress management techniques and to provide a relaxing environment for students before finals.

Students will learn how to prep for exams efficiently while balancing the demands of finals week. They should bring their study materials. This program is sponsored by the Reading Study Center.

Dec. 13: Chancellor's Late Night Breakfast, 9-11 p.m. at Blackhawk Commons
Yes, you read the time correctly! It is 9-11 in the evening. This is a time when university administrators, faculty, and staff serve breakfast to the students.

We have games and prizes to help the students blow off steam during exams. It's amazing how much food students can eat that late at night! There is no charge for students on a meal plan. If a student isn't on a meal plan, the cost is only $4.85.

Jan. 3, 2017: The 3-week interim classes begin
It isn't too late to sign up for an interim class. Students can log into TitanWeb to see which courses are still available. As a reminder: if a student has 12-18 credits in the combined 14-week term and 3-week interim (also called fall semester), there isn't an extra charge for the interim class. There also isn't an extra charge to live in the halls or for their meal plan. The only cost would be for a textbook or supplies for the class. It's a great way to get in extra credits without the extra cost!

Jan. 8: Textbooks for spring semester go on sale
If your student chooses to purchase textbooks at University Books & More, they can do so on the website  and in the store.

Financial Aid for 2017-18 School Year

Just a final reminder to complete the 2017-2018 Free Application for Federal Student Aid ( FAFSA) prior to Dec. 20, 2016. We hope to have awards out earlier with this new deadline. The expectation is that we would put "to do" items in the students' TitanWeb in January and awarding will occur in February 2017. If you would like additional information, feel free to contact the Financial Aid Office.

Student Health 101: Parent Edition
Meal Plan or Room Change Requests

If your student is interested in changing their meal plan for spring 2017, they can email  [email protected] from their UW Oshkosh email account with their name and eligible meal plan choice. Eligible meals plans can be seen on the dining website.

Students can request residence hall room changes for the spring semester by emailing  [email protected].

2017-2018 Room Sign-Up for current residence hall students will begin in February. Students will receive additional information regarding Room Sign-Up in January 2017. UW Oshkosh follows the Board of Regents housing policy requiring first and second year students to live on campus unless they meet certain criteria. Specific criteria for residing off campus can be found at  housing.uwosh.edu. The winter break provides a great opportunity to speak with your student about their experience and what they are considering for their living arrangements for the upcoming academic year.

I hope you have a great month and a relaxing holiday season!
