An innovative study of children and parents in both Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, led by University of Cambridge researchers Michelle R. Natural Remedy for Youth Sleeping Problems
[Source:  Psych Central]

New research indicates high rates of sleep problems among youth continuing through teenage years and into early adulthood. The study also suggests that although the sleeping issues come from a variety of issues, many can be controlled with early training on maintaining an active lifestyle.
In the study, investigators from James Cook University and the University of Queensland tracked more than 3600 people from the age of 14 until they were 21.

Reports of sleep problems were significant as "just over a quarter of the 14-year-olds reported sleep problems, with more than 40 percent of those still having sleep problems at 21," said lead investigator, Dr. Yaqoot Fatima from JCU's Mount Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health.

Concussion Recovery Can Take Twice as Long for Young Female Athletes
[Source:  Psych Central]

Young female athletes tend to experience concussion symptoms twice as long as their male counterparts, according to a new study published in The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association.

The researchers believe that the longer recovery period may be due to underlying conditions typically more prevalent in girls, such as migraines, depression, anxiety, and stress.

It was pinned to Pinterest by Tot School Tumblr, and seems to have originated on the Clark Family blog, although I cannot find the original post.

SLP Corner:  Ways to Distinguish Between Picky Eating and a Feeding Disorder
[Source:  Kennedy Krieger Institute]

Catering to a child who is a picky eater is like being a short-order cook: chaotic. Dinnertime becomes a war zone, leading to hopeless battles fought over vegetables and macaroni and cheese.

Picky eating is as normal as potty-training, a right of passage in childhood development. Taste buds evolve and food preferences expand in these early years. Even the best of parents can have a difficult time getting their child to eat. In fact, picky eating is one of the most common occurrences in children, often outgrown as the child reaches adolescence. But if eating behavior inhibits normal developmental and physical growth processes, it could be something much more severe - a pediatric feeding disorder.

Peds Tx Corner: A Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Therapy Day
by Erik Raj, MS. CCC-SLP

I don't think there's a single person alive who could honestly say that they've never experienced a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day. As practicing pediatric therapists, we know that some days are incredible, everything goes just as planned and the skies are sunny and crystal clear. But then, other days are not as picture perfect. I want you to know that I feel your pain and it's my hope that these digital words that I've typed bring you a bit of comfort because you

He will react to certain clothing in the same way someone might react to accidently smashing
Career Corner: Mentors are Everywhere
Teresa Roberts, MS, CCC-SLP

We are surrounded by mentors every day. It might not feel like it, because we may have a narrow definition of mentorship. If we limit the concept of mentorship to a formalized agreement between two people, we may miss out on the broad view of mentorship. Any work interaction provides us with a learning opportunity. In fact, we can cultivate mentorship from others by our own actions. Colleagues, related professionals, and administrators may enjoy informal
