Greetings!

The countdown is on!  We are so excited about the upcoming conference,  November 3rd through 5th at USCB!  Three great Session speakers, 90 hands-on sessions (including hands-on evening sessions both nights), vendor breakfast, food truck lunch, pre-conference sessions, and much more.  

If you have not taken a look at the conference website, check it out at:  http://scaeaconference2017.weebly.com/   You can find links about sessions, registration, hotels, and much more all in one location.

Please remember that the Quality Inn has a block on rooms until  October 27th.  Mention to them that you are registering for the  SCAEA conference to get the discounted rate.  On the conference website, there is a link that lists out other hotel options near USCB.

We are thrilled that the USC Beaufort faculty will be having their faculty art show opening and reception at the Sea Island Center, which is right across the street from the USCB Center for the Arts  on Friday from  5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.  Pop over there after your session and then come on back for our evening sessions!

We have some great door prizes for you, too!  Special door prizes include six vouchers for the Read to Succeed certification course for arts teachers! (Thanks Tracey Hunter Doniger for making this happen!).  Door prizes will be given at the  Saturday and  Sunday sessions so make sure you attend!

Saturday starts us off with an incredible vendor breakfast, our Keynote speaker, It's Only Fair food truck for our lunch option (yum), our lunch presentation from Chris Robinson, USCB Fine Arts Department Chair and installation artist, the  SCAEA awards and reception and capping it off, more evening sessions!

Sunday has lots of sessions both before and after our closing session.  Don't miss out on these opportunities!

Higher Ed Information from Tracey Hunter-Doniger
During the  SCAEA Conference we will be focusing on the new South Carolina Visual Art Standards and how they will be implemented the preservice programs.  We also are happy to announce that there is a Read to Succeed  online course that is specifically designed for Visual Art educators.  You can find this course on the Department of Education page at the  link below.  During the conference there will be a drawing for 5 lucky members to win a voucher to take one this Read to Succeed course for FREE!

Middle Level News from Joshua Powell
I'm looking forward to meeting with all middle level art educators during our conference next month.  I would love to hear how you are incorporating the new standards into your lesson planning and how that is impacting student learning in your classrooms. Youth Art Month News from Randall Clamp
2017/2018  Youth Art Month: National Flag Design Contest
We are looking for a few good artists to submit flag designs to represent our state at the Youth Art Month Museum next year at the NAEA convention.
  • Incorporate the national theme "Building Community Through Art" into the design.
  • Include the name "South Carolina" somewhere in the design.
  • Submissions need to be in a vertical format, since all flags will be displayed vertically in the Youth Art Month Museum.
  • Creatively use images that represent SC or represent art.
  • Include the words "Youth Art Month" somewhere in the design.
Each art teacher can submit up to three designs. An overall winner will be selected and made into the SC flag.


The deadline for submitting ideas is Monday, February 5, 2018.

Submissions can be emailed to randall.clamp@richlandone.org or mailed to Randall Clamp, A.C. Moore Elementary School, 333 Etiwan Avenue, Columbia, SC 29205.

For those of you who are interested in learning more about our new Design Standards,  I will be offering a 2 hour hands-on super session in Design on  Friday (early afternoon) as part of a pre-session to our conference.  Hope to see you there.
 
Standards
As a result of the dedicated efforts of a team of South Carolina educators from the schools and districts across South Carolina, as well as representatives from institutions of higher education and arts related businesses, the new 2017 South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards for Visual and Performing Arts Proficiency were APPROVED for final reading by the State Board of Education on June 13, 2017.

Professional Development
Carrie Ann Power is currently offering three regional professional development opportunities this fall for Elementary Visual and Performing Arts Teachers.  Professional development for Middle and High School Visual and Performing Arts Teachers will take place in the spring. Opportunities, Contests, Scholarships, and More
Mary Whyte Award 
Established in 2007, the Mary Whyte Art Educator Award is designed to highlight a visual art teacher in a South Carolina public high school who has demonstrated superior commitment to their students and to their craft. The award is accompanied by a cash prize of $2,500 and is administered and presented annually by the South Carolina Art Education Association.

R. Scot Hockman Teacher Grant
Applicants must be active members of SCAEA for at least one year prior to the year of application.  Applicants must also teaching in a K-12 setting.
Grant funds must be used to support instruction during the regular school day. The grant amount awarded may be up to $750.
Teachers that are awarded grant funds must present a session at the SCAEA State Conference following grant implementation. This presentation will include an overview of the their grant program or unit, a description of the impact on student achievement, the impact on the teacher's instructional practices, and examples of student and/or teacher products created through grant funds.
Grant activities must be founded on the National Visual Art Standards and provide effective, innovative art instruction.
Applications and letters of support must be submitted by 5 PM on Friday, January 13, 2018.

Arts Curricular Innovation Grants:
Grant Awards for FY18 should be released sometime in August. Writing an Arts Curricular grant is a great way to get the needed materials and professional development necessary to increase student achievement in the arts. The SCDE provides grant funds to schools and districts that propose arts initiatives that will support quality arts education programs that significantly improve student achievement in the arts. 
The FY19 grant cycle will be based on the implementation of the NEW South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Standards for Visual and Performing Arts Proficiency.
The new request for proposals is released in January and deadlines for applications are in April.  If you are interested in writing a grant, watch the SCDE website in January for the release of the new RFPs.

National Young Arts Foundation:
How do students apply for US Presidential Scholar in the Arts?
Young Arts, the core program of The National Young Arts Foundation nominates up to 60 candidates for consideration as US Presidential Scholars in the Arts following participation in Young Arts week. Young Arts can be contacted directly for specific questions at 1 800 970 ARTS or via email at  INFO@youngarts.org.
The registration deadline for this program is in October every year.  As an Arts Educator, please go online to view the student application process and get familiar with the program prior to next fall.  You may have some students you want to encourage to participate.

Archibald Rutledge Scholarship Program:
The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) is announcing the Archibald Rutledge Scholarship Program. This annual program offers public school twelfth-grade students the opportunity to compete for a scholarship worth approximately $2,000 in creative writing, dance, music, theatre, and visual arts. The purpose of the competition is to encourage and recognize academic and artistic excellence. 
Entries must be received at the SCDE by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, February 5, 2017, or postmarked on or before Monday, February 5, 2018.
