Spring Registration is Coming Up, Get Advised

With registration for the spring semester opening on November 13, now is the time to meet with your assigned advisor. Students who started at CSI in the Fall of 2016 and from that point forward need to meet with their advisor before they can register for classes. That is why the Advising Center and the Office of Instruction and Academic Affairs is sponsoring Advising Weeks. During the weeks of October 30 - November 6, students are strongly encouraged to make an appointment with their assigned advisor. Students can contact the Advising Center to make an appointment with a Focus Area Advisor or to find out who their assigned advisor is.

Dates: Mon., Oct. 30 - Thurs., Nov. 9 (campus closed on the 10, for Veterans Day)

Extended Hours: The Advising Center will be open until 7 p.m. on the following nights:

Advising Table Description: The Advising Center will set up an information table at different locations on campus. Students will be able to make an appointment with their Focus Area Advisor and get contact information for their major advisor. The table will be staffed by an advisor and a student worker. Departments have the option to coordinate with the Advising Center to have major advisors available during these times to advise students.

The Ooky Spooky Light Show 

After a four-year hiatus, Halloween programming returns to the theater with this program produced by Flint, Michigan's Longway Planetarium. The Ooky Spooky Light Show offers up family fun for all ages. The playlist of songs include: This is Halloween, I Put a Spell On You, Somebody's Watching Me, Night on Bald Mountain, Ghostbusters, Superstition, Bad Moon Rising, Spirit i n the Sky, Monster Mash and Thriller. While your ears feast on these tunes, your eyes will feast on the choreographed visuals filling the planetarium's 50-foot dome. Wrapped in sound and light you will catch the spirit of the season in no time.

Tickets on Halloween (10/31/17) will only be $3 per person!

Intersections - New Art, New Music

The CSI Stage Door Series will present "Intersections: New Art, New Music" on October 27. The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the CSI Fine Arts Auditorium. Tickets are $10 for adults or $5 for students and will be available at the CSI Box Office, by calling 732-6288, at the door, or by going online to  http://tickets.csi.edu/  Season tickets are also available, which includes admittance to all eight Stage Door productions for $70 adults or $35 for students.

Great Pumpkin Race 2017

5K RUN/WALK: Participants will run/walk a flat, paved course and trail route through the scenic College of Southern Idaho campus. Prizes will be awarded in each age group for runners and walkers with separate divisions for men and women. Long sleeve dry-fit shirts will also be provided for all 5K participants.  Start Time: 10:00 a.m.

1 MILE YOUTH CHALLENGE:  Youth will participate in a one mile race around the college. All participants will receive a t-shirt.   Start Time: 9:30 a.m.

CHILI FEED: After the race all participants are encouraged to enjoy some warm chili and corn bread sponsored by the Culinary Arts Program.

COHORTS Carnival in the Corn will be held every Saturday in October  from 10:00 AM until 8:00 PM. The carnival will be located behind the community gardens on the Breckenridge Endowment Farm just across from the Eldon Evans Expo Center on North College Road. CSI Outdoor Recreation Activities

Climb at City of Rocks * 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. * October 28 (Weather Permitting) * ORC
Practice proper climbing and rigging techniques safely on world-class crags in Southern Idaho. All gear, transportation, and instruction is provided. The cost for CSI students taking seven or more credits is $15. If you are a CSI employee the cost is $44. And, community members are $58 (-$15 if you bring your own gear). Cardio and Weight Training:
This class is for students with beginning to intermediate fitness levels. Students participate in weight training and cardiovascular activities to improve strength and cardiovascular endurance.
 
Barre:
This fitness based class uses a combination of postures inspired by ballet as well as other disciplines such as Yoga and Pilates.  Students use the barre as a prop to assist with balance while doing exercises that focus on isometric strength training combined with high repetitions of small range of motion movements.  The use of light weights and mat/core work will be incorporated into the course.

ReFit:
ReFit combines several elements of fitness into one power-packed hour. While the focus is structured around cardiodance movements, toning and flexibility, strength training and stretching are also incorporated into the Refit workout.
 
Spin HIIT:
This course is intermediate Spinning class, also known as Spinning H.I.I.T (High Intensity Interval Training. This class is made up of a short period of high intensity activity bursts followed by a short period of low intensity recovery movement. All done on the Spinning bike with in thirty-five minutes followed by stretching. Spinning is a full-body, low impact, aerobic exercise that can help strengthen the heart, lower blood pressure, boost energy, burn off excess fat, tone legs and stomach, reduce stress and tension, and boost peak performance.

Creepy Crawly Day returns to the Herrett Center for Arts and Science Saturday, October 28
 
The ever-popular Creepy Crawly Day offers guests a chance to get up close with all sorts of unique critters like snakes, lizards, spiders, scorpions and possibly even an alligator! The event is designed to help all ages understand that even though reptiles and insects may give us the creeps, they are essential and beneficial in many ways. The public is invited to come out and get up close with all of the creepy crawly guests that will be on display.
 
Creepy Crawly Day will take place in the center's Rick Allen Room from 1 - 5 p.m.; admission is free.
 
In addition, the Faulkner Planetarium will be showing the new Halloween program all day at all of its show times. The Ooky Spooky Light Show is a family friendly show offering up Halloween themed music with entertaining visuals choreographed to the music. The show will run at 1:30, 2:30, 3:30, 4:30, 7:00, 8:00 & 9:00 p.m. Admission prices are $6.00 adults, $5.00 seniors, $4.00 student, including CSI students with a valid student ID; children under age 2 admitted free. On this day only, receive $1.00 off your ticket price if you come to the show in costume.

Refugee

Students in the College of Southern Idaho's Diversity Council invite the community to celebrate Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, in the CSI Student Union.

Typically celebrated in Mexico and Central American regions, Day of the Dead is marked by family gatherings, meals, and prayers for friends and family members who have died as they take their spiritual journeys.

The CSI event will feature posole - hominy soup, pan de muertos - sweet bread, champurrado - a thick hot chocolate, and other treats. There will be a DJ and activities like decorating sugar skulls and face-painting. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend at no charge.

$7,500 Scholarship 
T he Barry Goldwater Scholarship  covers eligible expenses for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually, for students entering their junior or senior year. These students need to have outstanding potential and intend to pursue research careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering.  Many college majors are eligible for this scholarship. Eligibility specifications and application information can be found at the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program webpage. 
 
The application deadline is  December 8, 2017.

If you are a student interested in applying, now is the time to get started.  The application process is somewhat extensive.
 
a.     There is a pre-application form to fill out.
b.     There is an application form to fill out after your pre-application has been approved.
c.     Past and current college transcripts need to be collected.
d.     Proof of US citizenship, or a Letter of Intent to become a US citizen, needs to be provided.
e.     A two page essay needs to be written.
f.      Three online recommendation letters need to be written; at least two of which need to come from faculty members.
