GYPSY C. GALLARDO, Contributor ST. PETERSBURG - Earlier this month, about 100 people gathered at Mt Zion Progressive Missionary Baptist Church to celebrate a recent update from the federal Census Bureau showing the lowest poverty rate ever recorded for African Americans in the City of St. Petersburg.
It was welcomed news for the dozens of organizations who are partners to the 2020 Plan, a seven-year initiative to reduce the poverty rate by 30 percent in South St. Petersburg by the year 2020.
Figures published on Sept. 14 put the city's black poverty rate at 17.6 percent, which signals that the uniquely aggressive 2020 Plan approach may be on the verge of reaching its goal.
But the occasion had another purpose that made it even more special. Twenty-six of the people on hand for dinner that evening were mothers and fathers just finishing the half-way mark of the six-month STEP initiative at the Pinellas County Urban League to help their families exit poverty.

Creative Loafing: On Sunday, a large swath of St. Pete's Central Avenue will close to vehicle traffic - here's why
Walking. It's an incredibly easy way for most people to get around. It typically involves fresh air. You don't need a seat belt. The fuel you use comes not from the ground via some harmful drilling practice, but literally from you. Yet despite all this and more, walking is incredibly underrated.
This is largely due to the fact that cities have been designed specifically for travel by car over the past six decades or so.

Tampa Bay Times: Half marathon returns to downtown St. Petersburg with visions of big future
It has been three years since downtown St. Petersburg hosted a half marathon on the waterfront, and the upcoming St. Pete Run Fest aims to go the distance.
Other races have stumbled in recent years. In 2014, the owner of the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon and the Women's Running Half Marathon in St. Petersburg scrubbed both races, citing poor attendance. Organizers of the Rock 'n' Roll race estimated that 15,000 runners would compete in 2012, but that year, roughly 7,000 showed up. The turnout was even lower in 2013.
