46th CCIL Annual Conference coming up soon!
Le congrès annuel du CCDI se tiendra prochainement!
The conference will take place at 111 Sussex Drive in Ottawa on November 2-3, 2017.
The conference theme - Canada at 150: The Return of History for International Law - will encourage discussion and analysis on the impact on international law and Canada's place as the institutions of the international order are increasingly challenged by powerful states, populist movements and other actors.
This year's keynote speakers are the Honourable Charles N. Brower and Professor Dinah Shelton. Professor Armand de Mestral will offer the keynote address at the Awards Session as recipient of the John E. Read Medal. The program is updated regularly, please check it

Le thème de cette année est Le Canada à 150 ans : Le retour de l'histoire pour le droit international. Celui-ci encouragera des discussions et de l'analyse portant sur l'impact sur le droit international et sur où se situe le Canada alors que les institutions de l'ordre juridique international se trouvent de plus en plus contestées par des États puissants, des mouvements populistes et d'autres acteurs.

Call for Papers: Canadian Yearbook of International Law

The Canadian Yearbook of International Law, published by Cambridge University Press, is a leading international
academic journal covering both public and private international legal issues. Authors from Canada and around the world are invited to submit articles, notes and comments, in English or in French, that advance critical thinking in all
areas of international law. Submissions for the next volume (volume 55, 2017) are due no later than 31 January 2018, although earlier submissions are encouraged as the Yearbook has a rolling acceptance policy and benefits from Cambridge Journals' "FirstView" feature, which allows completed pieces to be hosted online prior to their inclusion in a final print and online volume. Full submission instructions and additonal information can be found at

Four Societies Conference

The Steering Committee for the Seventh Conference now invites paper proposals from members of the Four Societies.
Theme
: Changing Actors in International Law
The 2018 Conference will examine changing roles of actors in international law and their impact on relevant theories. In recent years, we have seen an increasing number of discussions and research on non-State actors, focusing on their legal status, functions and impacts of their activities. We have seen also the change of States, in terms of their status, elements, characters and functions. It is here where we are faced to issues of interaction between non-State actors and States. Noticeable topics will be, among others, responsibility shared between international organizations and member States, armed attack or exercise of self-defense against non-State actors such as terrorists, interplay and separation between public sector and private sector.

| The conference, which is being hosted by the College of Law and the Canadian Red Cross, will explore a number of issues regarding the implementation of the law of armed conflict. In addition to providing a substantive overview of the law of armed conflict, speakers will touch upon, among other things, the training of state armed forces, working with non-state actors, negotiating arms control treaties, and prosecuting suspected war criminals. Organisée par le College of Law et la Croix-Rouge canadienne, la conférence examinera une variété de thèmes touchant à l'application du droit des conflits armés. Gender Equality, Inclusive Governance and the Law
Ottawa, January 22 and 23, 2018
| The Canadian Council on International Law (CCIL) in collaboration with the Canadian Association of International Development Professionals (CAIDP) is organizing a joint event, which is set for January 22nd and 23rd 2018 in Ottawa.
In mid-2017, Canada announced its new
foreign policy priorities
in diplomacy and defence, in trade and in international development. Together these policies set out Canada's international position. Rather than turning inward in the face of turbulent times, this government is signaling an urgency to step up and address the strains on multilateralism. The ink is barely dry the new priorities, and the strategies elaborating on the policies are still to come. It is therefore an opportune time for Canadian practitioners from our two constituencies to become attuned to the policy and programming developments and to take advantage of the participation of Global Affairs Canada and international representatives to enhance dialogue around these issues before the new strategies are finalized.
CAIDP and CCIL are pleased to bring together policy makers, international law and development practitioners, and academics to hear the latest, discuss implications and make professional connections. Our collaboration is a first for the two constituencies. It emerges from our common interest in Canadian foreign policy and shared understanding of the importance of governance and the rule of law.

Le Regroupement des professionnels canadiens en développement international (RPCDI) en collaboration avec le Conseil canadien du droit international (CCDI) organise un évènement qui aura lieu le 22 et 23 janvier 2018.
À la mi-2017, le Canada a annoncé ses nouvelles priorités de politique étrangère dans la diplomatie et la défense, dans le commerce et dans le développement international. Ensemble, ces politiques définissent la position internationale du Canada. Plutôt que de se retrancher vers l'intérieur en ces temps turbulents, ce gouvernement signale l'urgence de monter au créneau et d'aborder de front les tensions sur le multilatéralisme. L'encre de la publication de la nouvelle politique a à peine séché et on s'évertue encore à en définir les priorités et les stratégies. Par conséquent, les praticiens canadiens de nos deux sphères d'action ont avantage à se familiariser avec les derniers développements de politiques et de programmation, et de profiter de la participation d'Affaires mondiales Canada et d'organismes internationaux pour améliorer le dialogue sur ces questions avant l'achèvement des nouvelles stratégies.
Le RPCDI et le CCDI sont ravis de rassembler les décideurs politiques, les praticiens du droit international et du développement et les universitaires pour comprendre les dernières discussions, discuter des conséquences et établir des liens professionnels. Pour nos deux organismes, il s'agit d'une première collaboration. Elle résulte d'un intérêt commun pour la politique étrangère canadienne et d'un accord partagé sur l'importance de la gouvernance et de la primauté du droit.

The Canadian Council of International Law (CCIL) and the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) held a reception on the theme of Renewing International Law and Governance in North America, in honour of the negotiators of the three NAFTA partners on September 24, 2o17 at the National Gallery of Canada.

Fall event: International Law Social

On October 18, 2017, the
CCIL,
uOttawa's International Law Group (ILG), the International Law Student Association hosted the International Law Social at the Laurier House.
Initiated in 2013, the International Law Social is designed to provide an informal atmosphere for lawyers, students, and professors working in international law in Ottawa to meet, network, enjoy some great food and even better company.
It is an excellent opportunity for students to meet international lawyers from
government, law firms, NGOs and businesses. They can learn, first-hand, about real life practice and career opportunities in international law. Similarly, practitioners can interact with professors and lawyers-to-be in an informal setting and network
with colleagues in the international law field whom they do not normally see in their day-to-day lives.
Stay tuned - next International Law Social will be held in the Spring 2018.

international
on organisé une rencontre sociale le 18 octobre 2017.
Initiées en 2013, les rencontres sociales en droit international permettent à des avocats, étudiants et professeurs œuvrant dans le domaine du droit international à Ottawa, de se rencontrer, d'échanger dans un contexte informel.
Il s'agit d'une excellente occasion pour les étudiants de rencontrer des avocats
internationaux, provenant du gouvernement, de cabinets juridiques, d'ONG et de différentes entreprises. Cela leur permet d'avoir une vision plus concrète du métier et des possibilités de carrière dans le domaine du droit international. Les professionnels ont également la possibilité d'échanger, dans un cadre informel, avec les professeurs et les futurs juristes, et de rencontrer des collègues en droit international qu'ils n'ont pas l'occasion de fréquenter au quotidien.
Restez à l'affût -la prochaine rencontre aura lieu au printemps 2018.

Members (appointment to roster), International Trade and International Investment Dispute Settlement Bodies
The Government of Canada is currently seeking applications from diverse and talented Canadians from across the country who are interested in the following positions, as well as applications from non-Canadians.
A number of international trade and investment agreements to which Canada is a party provide for the establishment of rosters of persons available to serve on dispute settlement bodies. Should a dispute arise under the agreement, individuals from the roster are named to the dispute settlement body through a process specified in the relevant agreement to determine the dispute in accordance with the provisions of the agreement.
Candidates must apply online via the Governor in Council Appointments website.

Si un différend survient dans le cadre de l'accord, des personnes figurant sur une liste sont nommées à l'organe de règlement des différends approprié au moyen du processus indiqué dans l'accord pertinent en vue de régler le différend conformément aux modalités de l'accord.
