#GivingTuesday
Next week, on Tuesday, November 29, St. Francis High School will be participating in #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving that kicks off the holiday giving and end-of-the-year tax seasons.  Please save this date and choose St. Francis High School as a recipient of your charitable giving.  Because of people like you, St. Francis High School continues to provide spiritual, academic, physical and social development opportunities for all students who enroll.

Thank You Joan Kustak
Joan Kustak, a favorite mathematics teacher to many, has taught at St. Francis High School for 33 years.   She has impacted the lives of thousands of students through her life's work here, and it's obvious that she has been moved by them as well.

Joan said she "loves this place, especially when we include everyone."   She would love to see an increase in social, cultural and economic diversity among the students in the building, but that is getting harder to accomplish with the rising costs of tuition.   So, Joan has taken the first step to begin funding a St. Francis High School Teacher/Staff Scholarship which will provide opportunities to students who otherwise would not be able to afford an education here.

This opportunity to create a scholarship is exciting because it comes from the very heart and soul of St. Francis High School - the people who work, or worked, every day to provide an excellent experience for our students.

Joan said that St. Francis High School is a special place for which the community is always there and willing to help.   In a time of great need, Joan and her children personally experienced the outpouring of love and support from the St. Francis High School community.   With her children behind her decision and encouraging her to make it official, Joan has decided to include St. Francis High School and the Teacher/Staff Scholarship in her will.

The students at St. Francis High School have benefited from knowing Joan for many years.   Now, future students will be the recipients of her stewardship for generations to come.

Toy Drive
The St. Francis High School Girls' Volleyball Team is once again hosting a Christmas Toy Drive which supports the Reach for the Moon Foundation established by Shelley Sensale '86 Bruss.  The foundation addresses the basic needs of local children: medical, dental, food and shelter. Each year, the St. Francis High School community helps Reach for the Moon collect toys at Christmas for the children they serve.

If you would like to help, please bring new and unwrapped toys for both girls and boys of all ages to St. Francis High School by Tuesday, November 29.  This is a wonderful way for alumni and current families to come together during the holidays to support the community.

Startup Day

On Tuesday, November 15, in partnership with Microsoft, St. Francis High School's Business and Technology department hosted Startup Day, an inaugural 12-hour event for 25 students currently enrolled in Business classes.

Students were broken into teams and were tasked with presenting a business plan for a new product, app or service to a panel of judges.  Using curriculum from Microsoft YouthSparks Camps, students learned the basic components of developing a business plan, including market research, pricing, distribution and advertising, as well as how to pitch their idea to a potential investor.   Throughout the day, alumni entrpreneurs visited with the students and shared their own stories of starting up businesses, providing valuable advice for overcoming obstacles and bringing innovation to their business plans.

The student presentations were evaluated and rated based on criteria which included the marketing strategy, business structure, financing, presentation skills and the products themselves.  The panel of judges were represented by two school parents, a representative from Microsoft and an entrepreneur/speaker.

The winners of the Startup Day's "Best New Business" were seniors Lexie Barella, Nick Brouch, Patrick Gerard and Sarah Jin for their innovative "Smart" Dog Collar and accompanying app "SmartBark", a dog collar that tracks the health and activity level of canines, relays key information to veterinary professionals, and connects pet owners to walk routes, dog parks, GPS services for lost pets, and other resources.  Each team member was awarded with prizes sponsored by the Microsoft Store in Oakbrook.

"Noises Off"
On November 16, eighth grade students from local grade schools attended the St. Francis High School complimentary performance of the fall play, "Noises Off".  They enjoyed the performance and were amazed by the students' talents.

The play also ran on November 17-19 for the general public.  The production, written by Michael Frayn, was a humorous play within a play from the back-stage perspective of rehearsal, the actors, and eventually, the live performance.
