Christmas for Children with Responsibilities
What is your mental image of a family of six,
two parents and four children or one parent and five children?
Possibly ...
But for a growing number of youth in our community, reality of the composition of a family of six is dramatically different.
Visualize a "Modern Day" family of six composed of two babies, three enrolled high school students and no one over the age of eighteen or a family of six where the
most stable member is a 15-year-old high school student taking care of their parents and three younger siblings and wondering how to make the holiday season bright for their family.
In a community of so much, it is sobering to realize how so many have so little.
To aid those youth of the greatest need who serve as the head of their household, the 100 Black Men of Madison via Project SOAR, in cooperation with the United Way of Dane County are staging "Christmas For Children With Responsibilities - Toy and Donation Drive"
Beneficiaries must be enrolled Madison Metropolitan School District students and recipients will be determined by Madison Metropolitan School District Personnel.
Donations of toys and gift card will be accepted until 20 December during business hours at United Way of Dane County, 2059 Atwood Avenue, Madison.
All donations will go to selected students 21 December, the last day of school.
100 Black Men of Madison and United Way of Dane County thank the community in advance for their incredible generosity this holiday season.

Project SOAR Days of Service Challenge
During the next three weeks, area youth will be exposed to the value of community service via the "Project SOAR Days of Service Challenge." This activity endeavors to inspire students in the development of a personalized foundation for civic action and thus create values that (hopefully) will result in a stronger, more caring community, now and in the future.
This initiative aims to both expand the impact of existing activities by engaging (new) youth volunteers in their work and encourage youth to develop their own projects under approved adult supervision.
To stimulate interest, select Project SOAR student groups will participate in a friendly competition, the "Days of Service Challenge". As a result, the top four groups who achieve the highest number of service hours will be given the opportunity to designate cash awards to a school activity of their choice.
All participating Mentees will be recognized at the 5 May, 2017 Project SOAR Educator and Mentor Appreciation Ceremony.

Charity Gala Raises More Than $154,000
for the 100 Black Men of Madison
The 100 Black Men of Madison were blessed by the opportunity to benefit from the Madison Club Charitable Foundation 2016 Charity Gala.
The sold-out event of 5 November drew more than 220 local businesspeople and philanthropists and raised more than $154,000 for the 100 BMM's Project SOAR initiative!
With the great success of the 2016 Charity Gala, the Madison Club Charitable Foundation has now raised more than one million dollars for area non-profit projects!
Project SOAR (Student Opportunities, Access and Readiness)
The target population of Project SOAR is African American male students, ages 12 -17, enrolled in either a middle school or high school of the Madison Public School District.
The Madison Project SOAR has been designed to serve students who are economically disadvantaged, from single parent homes, homeless, involved in foster care, involved in the juvenile justice system and other African American students who can benefit from the Project offerings.

Keynote Speaker - Dr. David Pate
David Pate founded the Center in 1995 and currently serves as the agency's Co-Director. Dr. Pate has worked in the field of social work for over twenty-five years. He has experience as a practitioner, administrator, and public policy advocate in the areas of low-income adolescents and adult males, fathers, and families. He has made numerous presentations and written articles on the issues that relate to the provision of service to minority males and the effects of social welfare policy on their day-to-day existence. He is an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Helen Bader School of Social Welfare. He holds a doctorate in Social Welfare from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was a W.K. Kellogg fellow in the Kellogg National Leadership Fellowship program.
