October 2017
Autumn is officially here, and I hope you all have time to get out and enjoy the crisp weather and beautiful foliage before snow arrives (again). And of course, don't forget to 'procure' some candy for the trick o' treaters!

Our Procurement Code Modernization efforts continue. We're currently conducting a full review of the rule recommendations made by our teams. A very special thank you to the teams, especially those who agreed to be team leaders!

I'd also like to extend my thanks to the state agencies and community colleges for providing us with the information we needed for the annual SDVOSB report to the state legislature. Although we fell short of the 3% goal, the State awarded 38 contracts to SDVOSBs, up from 28 the prior year. The SPCO team will continue to work towards achieving this important goal, and we appreciate the support we receive from individual agencies helping to bring awareness to their own departments.

Sincerely,

Cindy Lombardi, CPPB
Director, State Purchasing and Contracts Office and Chief Procurement Officer

Sustainable Purchasing

The SPCO has been working with the Responsible Purchasing Network to review and benchmark the levels of Green/Environmentally Preferable spend under our State Price Agreements. We have also been participating in workshops put on by the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council as part of a cohort with other NASPO member agencies. Look for more information and changes to come as SPCO works to move Colorado to the forefront of sustainable public purchasing!

NASPO Charitable Donations

We are pleased to share that on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, the NASPO Board of Directors approved a $50,000 donation to the American Red Cross.  The donation is earmarked for the procurement of disaster relief goods and services for Houston and other areas of the United States affected by recent natural disasters.  In addition, NASPO ValuePoint matched the donation, which was sent to the American Red Cross last month.
Fall Cleaning & Organizing Tips for the Office!

autumn_leaves.jpg
Everyone talks about "spring cleaning", but fall is also a great time to clean and organize your office!
  • Dust your computer. Grab a microfiber cloth to dust the CPU and monitor, then clean and wipe down the keyboard.
  • Streamline your desktop icons. A cluttered screen can be just as stressful as a cluttered desk. Set aside some time to create a logical filing system and reduce your desktop icons to just a few.
  • Sort that junk drawer. We all have a 'catch all' drawer where we throw things just to get them out of sight. Now is a good time to go through it and clear out anything that belongs elsewhere or just isn't being used.
  • Recycle! Have a pile of papers that's just gathering dust? Whether you need to shred or not, most offices offer an option for recycling paper products.

Name: Joe Weber
Title: Central Contracts Specialist
Organization: State Purchasing & Contracts Office

Tell us a little bit about your background : I was born and raised in California. I attended law school at UC Hastings, and practiced transactional law in the private sector for 20+ years in California, Alaska, and Colorado before coming to the State Purchasing & Contracts Office.

How long have you been with your current organization? : I have been with the State Purchasing & Contracts Office for two and a half years.

How did you get into the procurement field?: After spending all of my career in the private sector, I sought to enter the public sector and learn government contracting. I wanted to practice in the public sector and have found it both gratifying and challenging.

Did you work in other professions, and if so where and for how long?: After completing law school in California, I moved to Alaska for my first job as a lawyer. I then moved back to California where I worked as a litigator doing civil and commercial work, then as a private corporate attorney.  I've been in Colorado for about 10 years.

Please share a professional or personal accomplishment you're proud of:
I've practiced law continually since law school, first as a litigator, then as a private corporate attorney, and now as a government contract attorney, for more than 20 years.
Tell us something interesting and unique about yourself : I've passed the bar exam in three different states, and I'm a huge Joni Mitchell fan.
