In the midst of aiming to improve our physical wellbeing, whether that be through nutrition, a new fitness routine, or a group yoga session, I think that many of us fail to recognize an equally important dimension of wellness- our mental health.
The good news is that you are not alone. Mental illness is much more common than we are lead to believe. Depression is the leading disability worldwide. Anxiety interferes with our ability to enjoy our relationships, our careers, our dreams and aspirations.
As an individual who is currently being treated for major depressive disorder and social anxiety, I know through experience that it can continue to be difficult, regardless of the professional help you've received. The most valuable skill I've taken to help me cope with my emotions has been through writing my experiences.
Journaling your experiences helps you become aware of the state you are currently in, possible solutions, and most importantly, your inherent value as a human being. Writing your experiences down can feel like you are documenting an incredible journey where there is room for both the good days, and the tough ones.
Here's an article that talks more about the benefits of journaling for mental health
