District Honors McAbee For Volunteer Efforts
If you've ever been to a
Byrnes High School football game or other athletic event, you've likely seen his face there. And if you've noticed
Tony McAbee, you've probably also recognized that he does a lot of work behind the scenes.
Friends and colleagues say that's what the
Byrnes graduate and proud Rebel does best: work tirelessly "out of the spotlight" to support
Byrnes athletics and District Five programs. That's why District Five chose to honor
McAbee with its prestigious "Friend of Five" award at its Board of Trustees meeting this week, for his work on the playing field and throughout our school community.
As past president of the Rebel Touchdown Club,
Tony is the chief organizer of the
Byrnes 7-on-7 tournament that is held every summer. In this role, he attracts sponsors, schedules the tournament, secures volunteers, and plans the entire event.
In addition,
McAbee could be spotted on the sidelines last football season as a sideline reporter for Byrnes radio. He also regularly volunteers as the announcer for Rebel basketball games. Friends say the diehard Rebel does all of it simply because he "loves
Byrnes High School".
For that, District Five says "thank you" to
Tony McAbee! Congratulations on being named a "Friend of Five"!

Biography Brings Braille To Life At Reidville
Students at
Reidville Elementary School had a unique lesson in perseverance recently!
Students in
Karen Horton's 3rd grade class recently read a biography about Louis Braille as part of an ELA lesson. The tale interested students so much, they decided they wanted to find out more, and the class began research projects.
Reidville assistant
Cynthia Bailey, who is currently taking a Braille class as part of her visual impairment degree, volunteered to help the class learn more. Bailey brought an embosser, along with some paper, so students could see how braille is actually written. Each student had the chance to type their own name, and
Bailey showed examples of sentences so the class could see the unique writing upclose!
Way to go,
Reidville!

Morrison Tapped For High School Heisman
There are some students who set the bar. They work harder, show more passion, and lead by example-in the classroom, on the field, and within the community. Last week, Wendy's High School Heisman recognized
Emily Morrison
from Byrnes High School, awarding her the title of "School Winner" for her dedication
to never cutting corners.
Emily is a 3-year member of the Byrnes Varsity Volleyball team and a 4-year member of the Varsity Lady Rebels Soccer team. After graduation in May, she plans to attend Clemson University.
Since 1994, Wendy's and the Heisman Trophy Trust have been running the same play to perfection: honoring more than 600,000 of the nation's most esteemed students. This year, Wendy's will celebrate the accomplishments of thousands of the best high school seniors.
Congratulations,
