American Diabetes Month
November is American Diabetes Month and the American Diabetes Association wants you to share your story. Twenty-nine million Americans are living with diabetes; sharing real-life stories of the successes and challenges of managing
diabetes can help to remind millions of individuals they are not alone in this experience. The American Diabetes Association wants these personal stories to create a sense of urgency and raise awareness about this growing public health crisis. Click here to learn more about the "This is Diabetes" campaign. The American Diabetes Association website also offers great resources, such as a basic overview of the issues surrounding diabetes, healthy meal planning for individuals with diabetes, and ways to prevent or delay the onset of complications associated with diabetes.

As a quality improvement organization, it is our job to work with providers to help patients and their families find their voice. This online educational event will discuss how important it is to communicate with providers and how to do it in a productive, positive way. Karen Curtiss, author of Safe & Sound in the Hospital: Must-Have Checklists and Tools for Your Loved One's Care, will be the speaker on this webinar. It's Not Too Late to Vaccinate!
The first week in December is National Influenza Vaccination Week. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention chose this week to remind people that even though the holiday season has arrived, it is not too late to get your flu vaccine. As long as flu viruses are spreading and causing illness, vaccination should continue throughout the flu season in order to provide protection against the flu. Click here to see who is at high risk of developing flu-related complications.
National Handwashing Awareness Week
December 4-10 is National Handwashing Awareness Week, so there's no better time to review the importance of washing your hands. Handwashing is like a "do-it-yourself" vaccine. It involves five simple and effective steps (Wet, Lather, Scrub, Rinse, Dry) that you can
take to reduce the spread of diarrheal and respiratory illness so you can stay healthy. Regular handwashing - particularly before and after certain activities - is one of the best ways to re move germs, avoid getting sick, and prevent the spread of germs to others. It's quick, it's simple, and it can keep us all from getting sick. Handwashing is a win for everyone... except the germs.

Cleaning hands at key times with soap and water or hand sanitizer is one of the most important steps you can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to those around you. There are important differences between washing hands with soap and water and cleaning them with hand sanitizer. For example, alcohol-based hand sanitizers don't kill ALL types of germs, such as a stomach bug called norovirus, some parasites, and Clostridium difficile, which causes severe diarrhea. Hand sanitizers also may not remove harmful chemicals, such as pesticides and heavy metals like lead. Handwashing reduces the amounts of all types of germs, pesticides, and metals on hands. Knowing when to clean your hands and which method to use will give you the best chance of preventing sickness.
