Principal's Message
August 18, 2017
Dear Families and Friends of OLQP:
Happy New Year! School year, that is! What a joy to welcome students to the 2017-2018 school year. Seeing so many smiling faces and happy feet filling the hallways once again is what it is all about. Staff worked all summer on curriculum renewal, attending workshops, classes at the Rice University Summer Institute, STREAM prep, ordering materials, cleaning, painting, moving furniture and desks, decorating, and more in preparation for this moment. We started our first day by introducing our new staff members and new students. Booster Brigade led everyone in the SAINTS cheer.
Last January, the staff went to Victoria, Texas, to visit the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament convent where Sr. Antoinette's order resides. We learned about the founder of the order, Mother Jeanne Chezard de Matel. The order's charism is based on the Beatitudes. In order to honor our founder, Sr. Antoinette, and grow in holiness, we are delving into the Beatitudes this school year. "Blessed are the peacemakers" is the first Beatitude we are focusing on. What does it look like to be a "peacemaker?" How can we be "peacemakers?"  At prayer, in class, and wherever we go throughout our day, we will become more aware and more practiced at living the life that the Gospels demand of us.
Thank you for being part of this mission and ministry at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic School where we partner with parents to "Instill Knowledge" and "Inspire Faith" every day.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,
Mrs. Marianne Mechura, M.Ed.

Did You Know?
Drop Off and Pick Up
The traffic flow was designed with two curbside drop-off areas. The most efficient and safest drop off area for students in Kinder through 8 th grade is at the gym entrance from 7:45-7:55. Your child is going right into Marian Hall (gym) for prayer and won't have to walk across the campus. For the younger children, there are older students who can help them get settled. The front drop-off area is for Pre-k. In the case of inclement weather, either drop off area works.
Pick up is a little different. Pre-K dismisses shortly before K-5 with the intention of clearing that traffic before lower elementary comes out. Kinder through 5 th grades are with their classes in descending order from the corner of the building closest to Highway 2004.  Older students join their youngest sibling in order to make a "one stop" pick up. The back lot by Marian Hall (gym) is for Jr. High students only. This way, students are exiting the buildings and being picked up in the area that is closest to their classrooms.
Please help us keep everyone safe by being aware of the children at all times. While staff members are on hand to help students, it takes all of us working together to keep the children safe. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns about traffic.
News You Can Use...
Solar Eclipse
Students in 1 st - 8 th and staff will be gazing at the heavens on Monday afternoon for a few moments in order to witness the solar eclipse. Eyewear was purchased from an authorized company that was verified by an accredited testing laboratory to meet the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard. Students and staff have received instruction on proper viewing procedures. Parents are asked to sign the permission form and return by Monday morning. This is a great learning experience all the way around. Students can experience something that they have read about and have seen pictures of while also learning the importance of applying safety protocols.
Parent Portal
As part of the Archdiocese of Galveston Houston system of Catholic schools, OLQP is implementing a new student information system platform. What does this mean to parents? The parent information system that was used when the school had ACS is no longer active. Parents will receive information when the system is ready to launch. At this time, the staff is learning how to use the system and will work to ensure that information is correct. Information will be shared as it becomes available. In the meantime, teachers will be sending home parent information letters and grade information on a regular basis. If you have any questions about your child's progress, do not hesitate to contact  your child's teacher.
Labor Day Brisket Sale
This year's Labor Day Brisket Sale will benefit the reading program at OLQP. Teachers have requested the leveled readers that complement the curriculum materials that are used in lower elementary. Having the leveled readers will help teachers individualize instruction which is an important school-wide goal and a value to all students. You will not only be supporting a great cause but you will get to enjoy a delicious brisket as well!
