Dannon's non-GMO feed pledge 'tipping point'

When it comes to truthful and accurate conversations about food sustainability, U.S. farmers groups feel Dannon has fallen short. Now, those groups have pledged to continue to stand up for U.S. farmers' interests if food companies move away from reasonable and accurate conversations.

Together with its farmer partners and others, Dannon, the leading maker of yogurt in the U.S., is beginning to implement the Dannon Pledge it announced in April 2016, which commits to evolve the Dannon, Danimals and Oikos brands to be made with non-genetically modified organisms (GMOs). In addition, and as part of the company's ambition to secure independent verification from the Non-GMO Project, the company and its farmer partners have committed to convert the diet for the cows that provide the milk for these products to be non-GMO by the end of 2018 - specifically, Dannon and Danimals during 2017 and Oikos during 2018. These three brands represent about half of Dannon's portfolio of products.

The U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance (USFRA), made up of more than 100 organizations representing hundreds of thousands of farmers, sent a letter to Dannon's chief executive officer urging Dannon and other food companies to recognize that their sustainability goals, which are intended to reduce the use of natural resources, cannot be achieved without the use of modern agricultural practices.

Bullish agribusiness opportunities exist in global market

There are ample agribusiness opportunities available throughout the world, according to Christopher Nolan Sr., managing director and co-head of food, beverage and agribusiness coverage at PricewaterhouseCoopers Corporate Finance LLC, who gave the keynote address at the Export Exchange 2016 conference held this week in Detroit, Mich.

A number of forces are affecting agribusiness, Nolan said, including technology convergence, population growth, sustainability and food security, all of which the agriculture industry can address.

"Evolving technology in agriculture will continue. Resourceful farmers will continue to find ways to utilize technology to increase yield and reduce costs. Agribusiness is a global business and will continue to remain one," he said.

U.N. committee adopts animal welfare recommendations

New policy recommendations for animal welfare were approved last week at The U.N. Committee of World Food Security meeting held in Rome, Italy.

The recommendations included improving animal welfare, preventing the unnecessary use of antibiotics and improving biosecurity to prevent animal disease.

The U.N.'s recommendations include:
* Enabling access to veterinary services, vaccinations and medication, including antimicrobials;
* Improving animal health management through biosafety and biosecurity by following World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) standards;
*Promoting the prudent use of antibiotics but preventing unnecessary use and phasing out uses for animal growth promotion;
*Improving animal welfare by delivering on OIE's five freedoms;
*Promoting access to good-quality feed and sustainable feeding practices, and
*Promoting a physical environment and genetic section that ensure compliance with OIE welfare standards.
Global animal rights organization World Animal Protection (WAP) credited the changes to its lobbying efforts, saying, "Following our extensive work, substantive language on animal welfare was included in the recommendations, which have been adopted by member countries."

Attention: Animal Science Companies!
Are You Looking for a Way to Thank Your Best Customers?
S-PAC (Searchable Proceedings of Animal Conferences) is the largest online collection of proceedings from animal-related conferences in the world.  It allows subscribers from across the globe to access 560 proceedings from 59 of the top animal-related conferences worldwide-and it is constantly growing (visit http://spac.adsa.org to view a full listing of current conferences).  It turns conference proceedings from a book on your shelf, a CD on your desk, or a file hiding somewhere on the Internet to a comprehensive source of valuable, highly searchable information available whenever you need it. Users can search every article in the database in a single pass for exactly the information they need. It is a great tool for anyone in the industry, and its value increases every time new proceedings and conferences are added to the collection.
Does this sound like a resource that you would like to share with your best customers?
ADSA now provides an easy and affordable way for you to do that-the S-PAC Bundle. You can now purchase a bundle of subscriptions to distribute to your customers to show them how much you appreciate their business ... and they will keep you in mind as they use S-PAC!  Here are the basics:
Determine which bundle best meets your needs (multiple bundles may be purchased):
  • 25 subscriptions at $60* each:             total cost = $1,500
  • 50 subscriptions at $55 each:              total cost = $2,750
  • 100 subscriptions at $45 each:            total cost = $4,500
*Note: The ADSA individual member rate is $75 and the non-member rate is $150, so buying bundled subscriptions provides a considerable savings!
Then go to https://secure.fass.org/SPAC_bundles.asp  to place your order.   A pdf with your bundle's unique access codes will sent to you as a pdf, suitable for printing on business card stock, for easy distribution.  The individual to whom you give S-PAC will use the code to activate their S-PAC subscription (ADSA membership is not required to activate subscriptions), which runs for 365 days from date of activation. There is nothing else you need do except know that you will stand out and be remembered and appreciated by your most valuable customers.
