    Merriment in the Making

So many of us look forward to the holidays every year as the time to enjoy the company of family and friends. We revel in the time-honored traditions, and happily create new ones. We anticipate the joy and laughter the season brings, and await its magical moments.

Before we get there, of course, there is the shopping, the baking, the wrapping, the entertaining, and the cleaning, to name a few things.  How do we get to the magic of the holidays in only a few short weeks?
Making a List...and Checking it Twice
Of course, the holidays arrive at the same time each year, so it should come as no surprise as the calendar inches it way across time. Still, we do find ourselves wondering where the time has gone, and about how much we need to get done.

Decide the most important things that you'd like to accomplish:
  • If gift shopping is the priority, don't waste time wandering through department store aisles. Make a list and include a back-up gift idea for each person or group on that list. Need a gift idea?  Give the gift of ORGANiZiNG.(Couldn't resist!)
  • Need to prepare your home for guests? De-clutter the rooms that will be used for entertaining. Arrange the furniture to accommodate holiday decorations and socializing. All other rooms in the house can be off-limits.
  • Is holiday baking a tradition not to be missed? Create a baking zone and stock the kitchen with the baking essentials. Start picking up the needed items during regular grocery and other shopping trips, and avoid the onslaught of shoppers scrambling for the same items at the last minute.
  • Mark the calendar and make appointments with yourself to spend time doing the things you've decided are most important. Review it regularly and get the whole family involved.
As wonderful and joyful as the holidays can be, the preparations can sometimes be overwhelming. Be kind to yourself this holiday season. Choose the most meaningful activities that truly define the holiday for you. Set reasonable expectations for what you can get done in a certain amount of time. And then, enjoy the magic!
