Physical Literacy:
It Starts with the Community
Physical Literacy for Communities

After working with more than 300 communities across Canada, Sport for Life has launched this initiative to help communities develop a sustainable, long-term approach around physical literacy.

Sport for Life has created a foundation and framework that, with the support of a Sport for Life community mentor, can be tailored to meet the needs and capacity of communities across Canada.

Cowichan: An  Early-adopting Community

The Sport for Life staff have come across hundreds of community champions working tirelessly to progress physical literacy initiatives where they live, work, and play. To keep these projects moving ahead year after year, community champions are the consistent mechanism for that positive shift towards building a sustainable, active for life community.

In 2014 the Cowichan Region invested in a region-wide physical literacy initiative, supported by a grant from the RBC Learn to Play project. The initiative gathered momentum, but after a while the champions leading the project encountered obstacles and had to adjust and adapt their approach. Cowichan found ways to address these issues during the course of their Learn to Play project, and agreed to be an early-adopting community for the Physical Literacy for Communities initiative in order to continue their progress and to work toward physical literacy sustainability.

Easing the Pain of Cutting Kids from Sports

The practice of cutting, or the non-selection of athletes from sport teams, is one of the most controversial debates in youth sport. Whether you believe the team selection process "mimics the reality of life", "toughens kids up" or, on the contrary, "turns kids off sport" or "promotes elitism", cutting is a reality of today's sport environment.

So what impact does this have on young athletes? Are there best practices to improve the experience of being cut?
