"Art does not reproduce what we see; rather, it makes us see."
Paul Klee

Recent showing of my new work had me wondering what can be seen in my  paintings. It is interesting how children are open to the game of  finding the  hidden entities while adults ponder the images in quiet and may consider the title for direction.

Many lessons for beginning abstractionists encourage  the exploration of materials and focus on the formal aspects of the work. Although I consider both these aspects to direct the structure of the painting, my main interest as subject matter is to look for qualities in the paint properties that  communicate musical space, energy, transformation, life and death. Like a poet or a musician, I am looking for those bits and pieces  that can express what is elusive and expresses something deeper than the surface.
