Charity Gala in Support of Project SOAR

The Madison Club Charitable Foundation, the 501 (c) (3) arm of the Madison Club has pledged a multi-year effort to support local initiatives that bridge the achievement gap in Madison area schools.  The Charitable Foundations' board of directors selected the 100 Black Men of Madison's Project SOAR to receive the proceeds of the upcoming annual Charity Gala, 5 November.

Project SOAR (Student Opportunities, Access and Readiness) is a comprehensive program created to lower absentee rates and raise high school graduation rates among low income students.

The program involves one-to-one mentoring, career exploration and discussion on a number of social skills. SOAR Students will identify SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely) career goals, develop skills to influence others and gain a positive self-perception.

The 100 Black Men of Madison are humbled by this amazing endorsement of our mission to positively impact the youth of our Community by the Madison Club Foundation.  The opportunity presented by the 5 November Gala in Support of Project SOAR is a means to achieve the mutually beneficial outcomes of youth self-worth and self-sufficiency.

Please join us for the opportunity to support powerful mentoring relationships that build academic, social and emotional foundations for our city's most economically challenged youth.  To register, please access:

Martin Lackey Recognized:
A Dad, Businessman, Role Model

One Hundred Black Men of Madison member, Martin Lackey was recently recognized by the Waunakee Tribune for his impact and prominence in the community of Greater Madison.

At age 40, Martin Lackey Sr. acts like a man on a mission.

He strives to be a good father, owns two businesses, and contributes his time and talents to a variety of organizations in Madison and Waunakee. He maintains his hectic pace while battling a lifelong, genetic disability.

"Dealing with the lifelong blood disease, sickle cell anemia, which does not allow red blood cells to transport enough oxygen to various parts of his body, sickle cell sufferers have less energy and are often in pain," Lackey explained.

"I get little sleep and I stay in a lot of pain. But I feel like this is worth it. How I look at things, I viewed actions that challenged  my community for 30 some years, now I want to spend 30 to 40 years trying to be a positive influence and try to help build it."

"I'm not the perfect person, but somebody has to do it," he said.

Aside from being a father of four, operating two businesses, Martin is an active member of the 100 Black men of Madison and serves on the Health and Wellness Committee, the board of Dane Dances, and supports the Red Cross work on blood donations and sickle cell drives. His time and attention is also now increasingly turning to the Waunakee Rotary and Lions Clubs.

"To me, I'm a positive case because other people I've known with sickle cell don't make it to 35 and 40. I've at least made it to 40."

"In the near future, I would like to try my hand at motivational speaking and share my  'Get off your hands' message. I'm not a polished speaker, but I do have an interesting story that I live daily."
