A Message from the Dean...
To Find and Be Found by God
In those days they shall no longer say:
"The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge."
But all shall die for their own sins; the teeth of everyone who eats
sour grapes shall be set on edge. Jeremiah 31:29-30

What in the world does this adage mean: "The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge"? To understand what Jeremiah is saying, we first need to understand what the saying means.
The Jews believed that, often, bad things happened to people because their parents had sinned, and that when those bad things happened to them-such as in the case of Job-God was exacting a certain amount of revenge upon the children for the sins of the parents.
Jeremiah says, not so. Each generation is responsible for their own sins. And each generation must find God on their own.
Simply put, St. Matthew's is here to help people find and be found by God. The Prayers of the People put it this way:

I ask your prayers for all who seek God, or a deeper knowledge of him.
Pray that they may find and be found by him. (BCP, p. 386)

That is the heart of what we're about, namely, helping people find and be found by God.
Our aim is to remove obstacles and barriers to people finding and being found by God. Sometimes life throws us a curve ball that makes it harder for us to find or be found by God. That is why we have compassion for the needy around us: sometimes life's circumstances have made it harder for them to find and be found by God. We extend tangible love in compassionate ways to help people to find and be found by God.
When you give to St. Matthew's Cathedral, you are giving to help people find and be found by God, through our Food Pantry and Country Fair, through our Bishop's Camp, Summer in the City, and missions to Peru, through our Sunday School and small groups and guilds. We want to help each person on their pilgrimage to journey with God in an encouraging, non-threatening, and loving way.
