Housing Stakeholder Consultation Launched by Province of Manitoba

The Manitoba Government has initiated a housing stakeholder consultation as part of the process of developing a provincial housing strategy.

Four key discussion themes have been identified: addressing homelessness; condition of existing social and affordable housing; affordability of housing; and existing and potential homeowners.

Consultations begin in mid October and are being held in Brandon, Dauphin, Morden, The Pas, Thompson, Selkirk and Winnipeg.

Minister Duclos Announces Details on Affordable Rental Innovation Fund

The Minister responsible for CMHC, the Hon. Jean-Yves Duclos, announced on September 30 the details of the Affordable Rental Innovation Fund first announced in the 2016 federal Budget. The Fund is a $200 million program over 5 years, intended to create up to 4,000 new affordable rental units across Canada. Funding is available to individuals and organizations who want to build affordable rental housing in Canadian communities where there is a demonstrated need

Addressing Severe Hoarding Disorder

B.C. Government Unveils $500 million for Affordable Housing

The government of British Columbia has announced plans to make the largest investment in rental housing in the history of the province. The goal is to build 2,900 rental units over the next three years at a cost of $500 million.

Funding for this project will come from the recently announced 15% tax on real estate purchases by foreign buyers.  Premier Christy Clark, in making the announcement, said the province will rely on partnerships with nonprofit groups, community agencies and the private sector to build the new housing units.

Big City Mayors Put Pressure on Ottawa to Address Housing Crisis

Mayors from Canada's largest cities met in Toronto at the end of September to call on the federal government to set aside $12.6 billion to address what they say is a national crisis in affordable housing. The mayors expressed concerns that a second wave of major infrastructure spending being launched this fall will see housing initiatives squeezed out by other federal government priorities.
