Dear CCCA Friends,
Greetings and I hope everyone enjoyed the end of the summer months and is looking forward to welcoming Fall.
CCCA provides value for our members in many ways. Recently, my community experienced an issue that strikes at the crux of our Association. The community learned of a neighborhood rehabilitation facility that had been established within a single-family home. Residents were upset and a normally quiet city council meeting instead had a very interested and engaged audience that filled the room. Residents wanted to know how we could allow this facility to take root in their neighborhood.
This is an issue we are very familiar with through our work with CCCA, and our network of cities created connections for our city staff to easily reach out to other cities and quickly ramp up on the policy issues and legal nuances. We were able to speak openly and honestly with our residents about the legal restrictions, intervention by State policy, and our efforts to support reform through the work of CCCA. Much of the legislative lobbying efforts have been guided by Past President Lou la Mont from Malibu. Thanks Lou.
We have had continuing education and outreach to our residents on this issue so that they are fully aware of the permitting process and our efforts to help affect change in the State law, which is being led by CCCA.
It is important to reflect on the ongoing importance and consider the value of the personal and professional network we build through our involvement in CCCA. The above situation is a good example of that.
On another note, The Fall Education Summit has a long tradition of delivering top-notch speakers in a smaller setting that allows for thoughtful interaction and deeper exploration of public policy challenges. This year's event in Lake Arrowhead will be no different, and with key decision makers from the County and State, we will have all levels of government represented to discuss the challenges our communities face. I urge you to register soon, as the size of the event is limited. Hope to see you at the Lake.

ongratulations to Malibu for their outstanding table decor at the annual Sheriff's BBQ for our August Board Meeting. (La Canada Flintridge wins so many times, we felt bad for some other cities, so we did not compete this year). We had great attendance, and heard directly from the Sheriff on important issues facing our communities. Public safety concerns have risen in recent years across California due to changes at the state level, so it is good to have a partner like Sheriff McDonnell at the helm of the Department.

Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) is all the rage in LA County cities these days. Likely inspired by the County's launch of a CCA Joint Powers Authority (Los Angeles Community Choice Energy) program and a string of presentations, LA County cities have been actively evaluating CCA. This interest is great news for the cities and consumers, but cities also owe it to their financial futures and future city councils to vet the options that exist for CCA implementation. CCA has become a competitive space with choices abounding.
In our October City Manager meeting, we will hear from guest speakers about all of the current available options for cities today. Registration is required in order to attend the lunch. The Fall Conference is a chance for us to inform our colleagues about relevant and critical issues facing municipal government today. It gives us the opportunity to focus on one critical issue, drill down, and work toward a public policy position that best serves our association goals and objectives.

| Save the Date: 51st Sacramento Legislative Tour January 8-10, 2018! |
Join us for the 51st Annual Sacramento Legislative Tour. We look forward to another successful year of continuing to work at building relationships with the Legislature and Governor's office. This legislative tour will be the first opportunity to deliver CCCA's Legislative priorities for 2018. The Legislative Committee is in the process of finalizing this year's program and a tentative schedule will be provided at a later date.

Mayor, Ali Sajjad Taj
Mayor Ali Sajjad Taj has served on the Artesia City Council since December, 2013. He was elected Mayor on December 12, 2016. Mayor Taj has focused his energy and time on improving day-to-day quality of life issues for all Artesia residents. He has supported improved lighting, street quality and traffic safety, while being an advocate for bringing new businesses to the City both to generate revenue for City services and to provide new amenities for residents.
Mayor Taj has been in the financial services industry for the last 15 years. During his career, he has held several key leadership positions including District Manager, Regional Manager, Managing Principal, and Vice President with multinational firms like American Express, Ameriprise Financial, Weddell & Reed and T.D. Ameritrade.
Mayor Taj currently serves on several of the City of Artesia's internal committees and represents the City as an executive board member for the California Contract Cities Association.
