Dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine Announced
Florida Atlantic University has
named Phillip M. Boi
selle, M.D.,
as the new dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine.
Boiselle, who currently serves as associate dean for academic and clinical affairs, and professor of radiology at Harvard Medical School, and is a member of the cardiothoracic imaging division at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, will assume his role as dean effective in January 2017.
He will spearhead FAU's College of Medicine, one of 141 accredited allopathic (M.D.) medical schools in the United States, which admitted its inaugural class in 2011. Boiselle is poised to build upon the success of the college's innovative medical student education program and to expand its graduate medical education program in partnership with a consortium of five Palm Beach County hospitals. He also will oversee and build upon the college's vibrant research focus areas, including neuroscience and healthy aging, two of the key pillars of research strength in the University's strategic plan.

Medical Students Develop Geriatric Student Interest Group
College of Medicine students Lena Vaynberg, and Keira Nassetta, with the help of their mentor and faculty advisor Dr. Mandi Sehgal, showcased the new FAU College of Medicine American Geriatrics Society (AGS) Student Chapter, at the Palm Beach County Medical Society Future of Medicine Summit.
Established in 2016, the FAU AGS Student Chapter seeks to educate all medical students about the clinical needs and health care concerns of older adult patients and to encourage and provide opportunities to perform and present clinical and basic science research in geriatrics. Chapter co-presidents Vaynberg and Nassetta and Dr. Sehgal, the Co-Director of the Geriatrics Curriculum Thread and Associate Director of the M3 Geriatrics/Palliative Care Clerkship, founded this interest group with the mission of shaping students into health care providers dedicated to improving the health, independence, quality of life, and well-being of all older adults.
The FAU chapter will achieve these goals through various activities held throughout the academic year including but not limited to panel discussions, lectures, sensitivity training, community service, and residency advising. Any students or community members that are interested in being a part of or participating with the group should reach out to Keira Nassetta.

Boynton Beach High Students Train
at FAU Simulation Center
Through an innovative community outreach program to support diverse and economically disadvantaged students pursuing careers in medicine, 40 sophomore students from Boynton Beach High School had the opportunity to experience what it's like to be a physician for the day as they learned first-hand how to respond to medical emergency scenarios using state-of-the-art simulation technology. The high school students were mentored by medical students in the College. This program is a new affiliation between FAU's College of Medicine and Boynton Beach High School Medical Sciences Academy.

Students Participate in Active Learning Session on Falls
As part of the Geriatrics Longitudinal Curriculum Thread, co-directed by Drs. Mandi Sehgal and Joseph Ouslander, the second-year medical students at the College, participated in an active learning session on falls. During this session, students were asked to apply and demonstrate knowledge learned in a station-based, relay race format
.
Students appreciated the session, as demonstrated in two responses to the session below.
"The Falls Active Learning Session was a fun and creative way to provide awareness about the significance, risk factors, causes, and prevention of falls in older adults. With this in mind, I feel that we will all be better equipped to evaluate and identify things that would predispose a falling incident, and also use this knowledge to manage and minimize a patient's risk. Now, when I see older patients in the exam room who may be at fall risk, I'll have these tools in the back of my mind to guide my thinking and treatment strategies." -

"In this session, we learned how to determine if our patients are at risk of falling, performed a focused exam on a patient with a history of a fall, and reviewed strategies for reducing the risk of future falls. These skills will serve us well as physicians, given that falls are one of the leading causes of injury and death among older patients. As a student with an interest in geriatrics, I am grateful that our curriculum devoted time and attention to this pressing issue." -

at Clerkships Conference
The international meeting, Consortium of Longitudinal Integrated Clerkships, took place in Toronto this month.
Dr. Sarah Wood,
Dr. Jen Foster, Dr. Joanna Drowos, and Lacey Sorrentino presented information about the innovative clerkship programs at the College, which produced significant interest. Several of the presentations were collaborations with other medical programs such as University of California San Francisco and University of North Carolina Asheville.

Dr. Mandi Se
hgal will be working on a project entitled "Assessing
Medical
Students' Attitudes towards Older Adults through the Lens of an Innovative Geriatrics Curriculum."
She will be surveying our medical students in Year 1 and 2 about their perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors regarding older adults and use the data gathered to promote change within the current curriculum here at the College.
Dr. Dawn Sherling will be working on a project to foster empathy in first and second year medical students through listening, communication, and cultural understanding. Listening and communication skills will be based on motivational interviewing techniques. Empathy and cultural competency will be taught utilizing patient stories. These patient stories will be explored using various genres, including essays, longer works of non-fiction, as well as works of fiction. The students will examine the patient experience and their own feelings raised by the stories through reflective writing and discussion groups.

Internal Medicine Resident Received
the Milton and Joan Bagley Award
Internal Medicine Resident,
Andrew Nguyen, received the Milton and Joan Bagley Award, which is given in recognition of the practice of humanistic medicine at Boca Raton Regional Hospital.
The $5,000 award is based upon the skills exhibited by the First year Resident recipient who has consistently demonstrated, within the daily performance of their medical activities, an unswerving behavior pattern reflecting compassion, caring and empathy in their patient and patient /family relationships and interactions.
