Planning

Rachael Mack, SRPC GIS planner, has begun preparations to launch a regional web-GIS viewer called MapGeo. A web-GIS viewer is an online map that contains multiple data layers which a user can turn on and off to view different combinations of information. MapGeo is specifically designed for viewing parcel and assessment data, but additional data layers related to transportation, natural resources, economic development, and land use/zoning will also be included.

Municipal staffs and the public alike will be able to quickly access and view information on the location and extent of wetlands, land use classifications, and transportation projects-just to name a few examples-in their area. MapGeo's ability to provide a customized view of parcel and assessment data will enable town officials to keep sensitive information private while simultaneously giving public users direct access to data for their property. In addition, users can quickly determine how their property intersects with other data layers (e.g., FEMA floodplain) and share or print a customized map of their own!

SRPC is very excited to be able to offer this innovative online tool to the region. Municipalities have already begun to express interest in having access to it. If you'd like more information on how to include your community's parcel data in SRPC's MapGeo site, or for more general information, please contact Rachael at  [email protected]  or see SRPC's informational flyer.

Transportation

Nancy O'Connor, Strafford MPO communications and engagement assistant, attended the Northern New England Chapter of the American Planning Association (NNECAPA) Conference in Manchester, Vermont on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 7 and 8. The theme for this year's event was "What's popping up in planning" and focused attendees on such topics such as public engagement, food systems, and new technology.

In addition to attending a breakout session and workshops, Nancy was chosen to present as part of a session titled "Stories from the Street." This session featured staffers from four communities who shared their recent public engagement efforts. Their presentations were in rapid-fire pecha kucha style, in which a set of images is shown over a short time frame, with images associated with each piece of information. Nancy presented on the Partnering for Performance NH project and the outreach involved with the workgroup, colloquium, and how this outreach led to important project outcomes.

Economic Development

James Burdin, economic development planner, will be heading to the 2017 National Brownfields Training Conference in December. This conference, which will be held in Pittsburg, is "the largest gathering of stakeholders focused on cleaning up and reusing formerly utilized commercial and industrial properties." [1]

The conference will include several education sessions and mobile workshops, and will highlight brownfields-related efforts in Pittsburg itself. James' attendance at the conference will help expand Strafford EDD's knowledge of the Brownfields program, which will support the continued success of our Brownfields program and provide useful insights for future funding applications to continue the program.
