Book Sale
by Book Sale Chairman Paula Lofgren

Chatham has been humming with visitors this summer and so has the Library Book Sale. Lots of great reads have found new homes and new friends. Thanks to the generosity of donors we have a new section of more recent titles from 2015-17. Check out the display as you come down the stairs to the Forgeron Room. Happy reading!

Kerry Brown
It Was A Very Good Year by Kerry Brown, Friends President

As the old song goes, "It was a very good year," and the recently concluded - and very successful -Passport to Savings program added an exclamation point to the phrase. Many thanks to Bette Hahner and the entire Friends board for their great work! The Friends of the Library are especially gratified and FEPL members appreciative of the support of our 472 members who provided over $30,000 in membership donations during the past fiscal year, by some reckonings a record. Adding to the good tidings were exceptional revenues from the Learning Series, led by Tom Quill and Bill Roiter, and the Book Sale under Paula Lofgren's guidance.
These revenues enabled the Friends to provide major support for the Youth Services department, new computers for the staff, a new system for displaying art in the Forgeron Room, and a new Optelec optelec video magnifier for the visually impaired in addition to our yearly support for discounted museum passes, adult programs, and hospitality for many Library events.
As we look to the future, we are excited about funding some new construction work in Youth Services and supporting an initiative to redesign the landscaping in front of the Library. We also hope to define some "big sky" issues - long-range planning projects - that will contribute to the health of the Library. Once again, we thank the members of the Friends for your ongoing generosity and support.

What Would We Do Without Our Friends? by Tammy DePasquale, Youth Services Librarian

Build a Better World

The official end of our summer season in Youth Services is just days away. And what a summer it was! We offered over 95 programs for infants through grade 12, and that number does not include the many activities that directly supported our Collaborative Summer Library Program, Build a Better World!
So, how is this possible? Well, it all starts with the Youth child building Services team. Sarah Doyle, Sam Rome, Nina Berghausen, Sherry Hesch, and I begin planning in late fall. This team is the best: dedicated, creative, fun, and always so respectful of and grateful for the young patrons and families we serve.  We then collaborate with the schools and other local youth organizations to reach out to as many children, young adults and families within our community as possible. Performers are booked; staff-led programs are planned, and calendars are written and published. Build a Better World was launched on June 15th!
Yet, none of this would be possible without the generous support of the Friends of the Eldredge Public Library and the hours of assistance from our Jr. Friends - tweens and teens who live here year-round and others who visit during the summer season. The FEPL members work tirelessly to fund Youth Services programming and to provide supplies and resources needed to offer quality services and activities. Our Jr. Friends provide the "extra hands" needed to prepare materials, set-up and breakdown rooms, and assist with the demands of 95+ events.
As fall approaches, Youth Services is gearing up for the start of school, and, yes, next summer's roster of fun. We move forward knowing that our Friends, young and older, do indeed Build a Better World at our library and make all things possible! Thank you, thank you!

The Friends ask for your support!
by Sherry Hesch and Tom Quill, Membership Committee

FEPL Membership Form

Our FEPL membership drive was mailed out in July. Your continued support allows us to fund those services and projects that are beyond the regular operating budget of the library.  If you haven't already, please take a minute to renew your membership online, by mail or drop off at the library.  We can never have enough Friends!
Annual Fund Drive
by Trustee Development Committee

     The FY18
Annual Fund Campaign letter will hit mailboxes this fall.  Proceeds from the Annual Fund go directly to  library logo Library operating costs such as salaries, utilities and materials (books, DVD, audio books, etc).  The generosity of donors and the success of this campaign has a profound impact on our ability to continue to provide the high level of services and programming upon which our community depends and definitely deserves!  The Town of Chatham provides 60% of our operating budget.  The Library funds the remaining 40% through endowment income, grants and donations to the Annual Fund.  Every donation counts.  We appreciate and thank you for your support!

Books in Bloom

Thank you to everyone who made our "Books in Bloom" a major success!  The arrangements were beautiful and creative, the food was delicious and the company couldn't be beat!  We are so lucky to have so much support from our community!
