What Bob Draws With and What On...
Welcome to another BobBlast!
When sketching and drawing into my paintings, I prefer several types of "mark makers" and several types of paper. This BobBlast is all about my abbreviated notes for my practice and two minute poses in my Figurative Workshops.
Materials I use: I use the affordable Strathmore Toned Gray paper from their spiral bound pads, 400 series, 11x14 inch and 22x30 inch size.
For "high-end" results and possible candidates for gallery sales, I like to use Canson BFK Rives - Gray, 280 GSM, 22x30 inch size.
For watercolor sketching on location I prefer the convenient Fabriano Studio Watercolor Pad, Hot Press, 140 lb. Light weight, yet stays flat. This paper can handle it!
And, my all time favorite paper that really handles my heavy-handed techniques for drawing as well as for the final acrylic paint is Cheap Joe's Kilimanjaro Bright White 300 lb Cold Press - not smooth. And hey, it's made in Italy! (I feel like such an artist using it!)
The charcoal drawings are done with soft Willow Charcoal Sticks. They are super dense, black, soft and rich. I also use large jumbo pastel sticks. Besides your regular supplier, checkout Dakota Art. They have a huge warehouse in La Connor, Washington - I am like a kid in a candy store when I teach there!
The pencils I like to use are Derwent Inktense Water-soluble Ink Pencils or their Inktense Blocks - and they are intense when i wet the dry sketch. For sketch washes, I prefer any top, professional brands like Derwent or General. I sketch first, then with water from a clean brush, dissolve some areas and soften some lines just by using clean water. I like how it bleeds.
Holbein Acrylic Fluids are also my go to mediums. I use them like watercolor.
After the sketch has dried, I seal it with SpectraFix Degas Pastel Fixative. It is the original casein formula for pastel, pencil, charcoal, watercolor and mixed media. And no - it does not turn yellow-ish. The finish is clear, satin, and no color shift.
Buy good stuff and paint more. You deserve good art materials NOW. (Boy I wish I got paid for all this!)
