Following well-received regional kick-off meetings in Elizabeth, Hackensack and Trenton (scheduled for Oct. 20th), Jersey Water Works, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and New Jersey Urban Mayors Association are hosting two communications workshops in late October to help communities with combined-sewer systems build support for water infrastructure investments.

For municipal or utility staff members in a CSO permittee community, register for Making Infrastructure Matter: A Hands-On Workshop for Stakeholder Communications. Oct. 24, 2016, at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark. Attendees will receive customizable materials and be eligible for free consulting services.

For community organizations, environmental group or members of the public, register for Communicate on Water Issues to Engage Stakeholders. Oct. 25, 2016, at the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority in Newark.
Elevate Your Work by Announcing Your Project at the Jersey Water Works Conference

Join leading organizations in announcing your new initiative or project to more than 300 public- and private decision-makers, practitioners and community stakeholders at the Jersey Water Works Conference on Dec. 2, 2016, in Newark. The conference will feature exciting speakers, a spotlight on the City of Newark, exhibits, great networking, and a celebration of Jersey Water Works members and their commitments.

New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Launches new Asset Management Website
NJDEP has created a new website to assist New Jersey water systems in implementing and refining asset management practices as well as meeting requirements. The website provides an overview of asset management, applicable regulations and requirements, status of asset management in New Jersey and additional resources, guidance and tools.

United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) Provides $365,000 for Trash Free Waters in New Jersey and New York Waters
Three of our members have received funding from the U.S. EPA including:
  • North Hudson Sewerage Authority - $48,125 to fund its "Preventing Aquatic Trash" program
  • NY-NJ Harbor & Estuary Program/Hudson River Foundation - $67,693 to collect data on how litter is generated and dispersed in New Jersey
  • Clean Water Fund - $47,250 to fund its "ReThink Disposable in Jersey" program.
Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program Launches New Effort in the Highlands and Pinelands
The RCE Water Resources Program received a $500,000 grant from the William Penn Foundation to provide specialized technical assistance to assess impervious cover and manage stormwater for 20 municipalities in the Kirkwood-Cohansey and New Jersey Highlands subwatershed clusters.

Funding Opportunities

Community-based Marine Debris Removal. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Marine Debris Program offers up to $350,000 to support locally driven, community-based marine debris prevention and removal projects. These projects benefit coastal habitat, waterways, and wildlife including migratory fish. Applications due Oct. 14, 2016.

National Science Foundation's Environmental Sustainability Program. Grants available for research that improves management and distribution of stormwater collection systems and advances smart-growth strategies including innovations in stormwater management, water reuse, and other green engineering techniques. Application submission period is Oct. 1-20, 2016.

2016 Urban Innovation Conference: Building Collaborative Partnerships across University, Community, and Civic Leaders - Hosted by the Rutgers Cooperative Extension, this Northeast Regional conference will be held on Nov. 29-30, 2016 in Newark, NJ. Registration is now open! The conference will highlight research and projects across disciplines that are helping to build more resilient, sustainable, and healthy urban communities. Green Infrastructure and Asset Management Webinar. This recorded webinar explores CDM Smith's NYC GreenHUB tool, an integrated system capable of compiling, mapping and reporting data from thousands of green infrastructure installations and their effectiveness in New York City, and asset management programs in Philadelphia and Camden. The webinar was hosted by the Jersey Water Works Green Infrastructure Committee and the Lower Raritan Watershed Partnership.

Sewage Overflows From Hurricane Sandy. This report by Climate Central explores where sewage overflows happened during Hurricane Sandy, what caused them, and how treated each overflow was.

Green Infrastructure and Climate Change: Collaborating to Improve Community Resiliency. This new report summarizes charrettes, or intensive planning sessions, convened in four cities by the U.S. EPA to demonstrate how green infrastructure could be applied to communities dealing with a range of climate-related challenges.
