Mayor's Message

Dear Friends,
The "Sustainable Saturday" Parking Lot Party this past weekend was an excellent opportunity for both the City of Kingston and Ulster County to showcase the progress we are making in our efforts to reduce energy consumption and shift towards renewable energy sources. The event, one of many hosted around the country as part of Drive Electric Week, provided information to local residents on the area's sustainability initiatives, as well as an electric vehicle auto show. The City of Kingston, having already achieved designation as a Bronze-certified Climate Smart Community, is set to make another great step towards reducing our reliance on fossil fuels through the purchase of a Chevy Volt for the Building Safety Division. The electric car will be purchased at a significantly reduced price, thanks in large part due to current rebates and incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles. This car joins another recently purchased electric vehicle for the Kingston Police Department. While I personally feel shifting our fleet towards electric vehicles is the right thing to do for our environment, it is also the most fiscally responsible. We are projecting a significant savings on fuel costs each year!

This closure is necessary in order for engineers contracted by the NYS Department of Transportation to inspect local and state-owned bridges in our region.
