Here's a look at what's happening around District Five schools this week!
District News
Five's Finest Honored

Several of District Five's best educators received some much deserved recognition last week!  Gail Smith, of Abner Creek Academy, and Rhonda Demumbreum and Mark Bigby, both of Byrnes High School, were honored as "Five's Finest" teachers, for their commitment to their schools and students.

Five's Finest, a program that started over a year ago, recognizes teachers are going above and beyond, both inside and outside the classroom.

Smith, a 2nd grade teacher at Abner Creek, has been at the school since 2008.  Administrators describe her as "loving and kind", and the "type of teacher you'd want your child to have."  Smith also is a lead organizer of the school's Veteran's Day program, an annual tradition at Abner Creek.

Rhonda Demumbreum
and Mark Bigby are both longtime Rebels at Byrnes High School and serve as co-chairs of the school's "Welcome Committee".  Along with others, it is their job to welcome new teachers to the staff, and get them acclimated to Byrnes when they first arrive.  According to Principal Todd Hardy, both Demumbreum and Bigby spend a large part of their summer making sure new teachers feel "at home", and getting them adjusted to their new jobs.

Demumbreum is also a lead organizer for the school's Prom each year, and Bigby volunteers his time with the football team, creating graphics for each home football game.

Congratulations Gail Smith, Rhonda Demumbreum, and Mark Bigby!  We are so proud of you!
D5 Students Meet At Pole

Students across District Five joined hands, and hearts, this past week, in honor of "See You At The Pole" day.

Students at Byrnes High School, Berry Shoals Intermediate, D.R. Hill Middle, and Florence Chapel Middle School, amongst others, gathered to pray for their schools and our country.

Enjoy these pictures from the event!

Buy A Piece Of Byrnes History

If you're a die hard Rebel, the Byrnes High School AFJROTC has just the opportunity for you!

In commemoration of the 2016 Construction Project, cadets are sponsoring a brick fundraiser project to benefit the Byrnes High Student Council, the Fishing Club, and AFJROTC.

200 bricks were "rescued" from the demolition of the original Byrnes cafeteria which later became the AFJROTC wing. Each has a commemorative plaque and is individually numbered - no two are alike.

Individual number requests will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. The requested donation is $50 and all proceeds will go toward student activities and support at Byrnes High School.

If you would like to participate please call AFJROTC at 864-949-2364 or email us at [email protected] . Bricks will also be available during home football games.

Support this worthwhile cause, and Go Rebels!

Duncan Parents Head Back To School

Parents and families at Duncan Elementary
got a chance to head back to class last week!
Parents were invited to visit their children, and attend a special breakfast provided by the school.

The event gave families the chance to learn about the district's new 1:1 initiative, and how all classes from K4 to 4th grade were provided with iPads, Chromebooks, and/or Dell Laptops in order to prepare students for being the 21st Century Learner. Parents enjoyed their breakfast and the opportunity to visit the classrooms and experience what it is like being a student again!

Way to go, Duncan!

Students Team Up For Pig Project at Reidville
Visit Reidville Elementary this week, and you might spot some pigs and even the big, bad wolf!  1st grade students in Laura Brockman's class are teaming up with 4th grade students in Paula Quinby's class for a "Three Little Pigs" adventure.

Brockman's students recently read the popular tale, in studying how books have a beginning, middle and end.  As part of the same project, Quinby's students were presented with the problem of how to build an indestructible house that the big, bad wolf couldn't blow down.

When the homes were ready to be put to the test of the wolf's "huff and puff", Brockman and her students joined in!  Brockman, with the help of a hairdryer, played the role of the wolf.

Quinby's 4th graders now must create an advertisement marketing their homes to other pigs (their 1st grade friends), to see which one they prefer.

 Great job, Reidville students!

Abner Creek Goes Back In Time

Students and teachers at Abner Creek Academy traveled back in time for a good cause this week!

The school celebrated "Decades Day" as a way to kick off fundraising for Relay for Life.

Keep up the good work, Abner Creek!

Beech Springs Students Go On Wild Ride For Learning

It wasn't a trip to the amusement park, but it sure felt like it for students at Beech Springs Intermediate School recently!

Science students at Beech Springs recently studied  about design, teamwork, and perseverance by designing and building roller coasters.  The team, known as "Beech Builders" were tasked with building a ride for "The Beech Blast" amusement park.  Students researched roller coasters, came up with a sketch, and built their own coasters.

After the entire design process, they presented their coasters to the class and the Beech Builders board of directors (their teachers).

Great job, Beech Springs students!
