Fall Greetings from the Foundation
I'm deeply honored by the confidence placed in me by my fellow directors since my election to president of the board this July. I've served on the board for three years, and have been active on the Lake Anne Development Committee during that time. I'm recently retired from a 30 year career in community development, affordable housing, and finance. My work, both professional and volunteer, is rooted in my long-term commitment to social justice, and I'm  excited by the opportunities to further the mission of Fellowship Square Foundation.  

This is a time of tremendous change for the organization as we begin implementing our strategic plan: hiring a new executive director; engaging third-party professional property management, building on the good work of National Lutheran Communities & Services; and redeveloping Lake Anne Fellowship House. 

While we adapt to changing conditions in the world around us, one thing remains constant, our dedication to the mission of serving seniors. I see the wonderful work of our staff and volunteers who enable our residents to live independently and with dignity. Most importantly, we're improving on the delivery of our most important service: providing a decent, secure, affordable place to call home. It's the foundation that makes everything else we do possible. 

This is a high-cost region where it is difficult for anyone of modest means, particularly seniors on fixed incomes, to find housing that is affordable. Many struggle to keep a roof over their head and too many slip into homelessness. As a region, we are not even maintaining the existing supply of housing that's affordable, let alone increasing it to meet the need. That is why we are proud to have found a way to replace all 240 affordable apartment units at Lake Anne with modern, accessible, and sustainable housing that will be a resource to the community for decades to come. 

We are positioning ourselves to meet the challenges of the future and deliver on the mission. I look forward to the journey ahead.

Hunters Woods Fellowship House

This summer was an active one for residents at Hunters Woods Fellowship House. We kicked off the season with the Cruise into Summer Safety event that shared safety tips and healthy smoothie recipes with residents. In July, we took a break from the heat with an ice cream social and dance party. Residents created their own ice cream sundaes, showed off their dance moves and participated in an upbeat game of musical chairs.

July also saw the installation of new electronic monitors in the lobby of each floor. These monitors display important information, notices, and event reminders. This provides enhanced communication between residents and Hunters Woods management.
 
Hunters Woods said goodbye to summer with a well-attended Grandparents' Day Picnic on the patio. Grandchildren came to share hamburgers and hot dogs with their grandparents and make crafts.

As the focus shifts to the upcoming election, we want to ensure residents are prepared to vote. Representatives from the Virginia Department of Elections will assist residents with voter registration, voter ID cards, and absentee ballot requests.

Lake Anne Fellowship House

On September 1, Fellowship Square Foundation's Board of Directors formally approved and entered into a partnership with Community Preservation and Development Corporation (CPDC) to redevelop Lake Anne Fellowship House in Reston, Va. The new construction project will replace all 240 apartment units in the 1970's-era building with a new, state of the art facility. CPDC is an experienced, non-profit developer of affordable housing with a long track record of creating successful communities.

Lake Ridge Fellowship House

Lake Ridge Fellowship House Activities Committee sponsored a Back to School Drive to support two of the area's lowest income grammar schools, Belmont Elementary School and Fred M. Lynn Middle School. A barrel of school supplies was collected and presented to the schools to help those in need, including notebooks, crayons, markers, glue, and more. Residents continue to fill the barrel with supplies to maintain donation efforts for this great cause.
 
The Activities Committee is also participating in a cooperative project with the Woodbridge Women's Club to provide knitted and crocheted hats, scarves and gloves for those same students. The Women's Club provides the materials and our committee members who excel in this craft complete the needlework. To date, the ladies have made approximately 100 total items of hats, scarves and gloves for the children. We are excited about this ongoing project that will provide warmth and comfort to the greater community in need.

Largo Landing Fellowship House

Largo Landing Fellowship House staff coordinated various events for residents during the summer months. These events, two of which are highlighted below, are designed to promote socialization and encourage a family atmosphere among the residents.

On June 30 Largo Landing celebrated its 14th Annual Resident Appreciation Day Cookout with over 70% of the residents in attendance. Residents participated in different games like Name That Tune, Karaoke, and Bingo for prizes.

In honor of National Ice Cream Month Largo Landing held an Ice Cream Social and more than half of the residents attended. Residents enjoyed creating their perfect sundae, pairing a variety of ice cream flavors and toppings. This was a great way to cool down on a hot summer day!
Donor Impact

In anticipation of the upcoming season, help spread some holiday cheer by participating in one of our outreach drives. Donor dollars are used to buy gift cards for residents to use in the future. In between celebrations, your contributions enable us to assist with  medical and dental expenses, transportation costs, pastoral care, and other urgent or emergency needs that would otherwise be beyond the means of our residents. Thank you for your partnership and support to enhance the wellbeing of  the residents in our communities.
