Mouth to Ear - From GL of Wisconsin Newsletter

Subject: Mouth to Ear

This one is for Chester, and Carl, and Dennis...

Historically Masonic ritual has been passed down from "mouth to ear." This means that the ritual work was not written out but was shared only by one brother verbally passing it along to another. This is especially true for what is known as the "esoteric work." The esoteric work can also be called the "hidden work" or the work that is not spelled out, or written out. Some may also call it the "secret work."

Esoteric is defined as "intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with a specialized knowledge or interest."

Eventually as Masonry spread and Masonic authors became more and more creative, elaborate lectures were written. The challenge of trying to pass these down from mouth to ear caused Masons to create "Monitors." These monitors were books that contained many of these beautiful lectures as well as ceremonies such as Masonic Memorial services.

Even the Monitors did not always spell out every word and syllable. Quite often esoteric parts of a lecture were simply noted with  * * * * where the words belonged.

So how could a Mason learn what those hidden words were? Mouth to ear of course. It was necessary for the student to work with a Masonic mentor in order to learn that "secret work."

As our society has moved to instant gratification and needing to move ahead swiftly, even Masons have looked for short cuts. The esoteric work was written out in the form of single letter ciphers. The words were not written out, but the first letter of each word was given. With the help of a mentor, the student now had a key that he could use to do some study on his own. Later the single letter cipher became a multiple letter cipher (which we now use). No words can be ciphered with more than three letters, but it became even easier for the student to study on his own. In some Masonic jurisdictions around the country, the work is now being written out word for word. This allows every Masonic student to now study all of the work on his own.

I didn't learn all of my memory work mouth to ear. I learned from posting keys, but I still was blessed to work with mentors who helped me out.

Chester was my sister-in-law Barb's Dad. He signed my petition for lodge along with my brother-in-law Lee. As I worked my way through the degrees Lee was stuck working second shift so Chester took me under his wing and invited me into his home to work on the candidate posting. These posting sessions helped to build a great bond which I will always cherish.

Our posting sessions developed into a ritual. Chester's wife Audrey (Barb's Mom) would set up snack trays back in the TV room at their house. She'd set up the snacks and Chester would go fetch a couple of Pabst Blue Ribbon "tall boys." (Chester's neighbor worked at Pabst.)

Chester wasn't a great ritualist, and he didn't remember all of the words, but he followed along and helped double check me. He coached me on the parts that he remembered. The best part of these sessions were the memories that Chester shared. He told me about the old timers from the lodge. He told me how his co-workers had encouraged him to join the lodge while he was still single and could afford the fees!

Sometimes during our posting sessions we talked about family, or fishing on the Chippewa Flowage. The memories and the bond of fraternal friendship that developed during these posting sessions are priceless.

I was also helped by our lodge poster Carl on lodge nights, and when I became an officer, Dennis helped. More bonds were formed.

I never would have developed those special bonds if everything had been written out and I had learned it all on my own.

Fraternally,

Don
