Do Kids with Tourette Syndrome Have an Advantage at Language?
[Source: Science Daily]

Researchers from Newcastle University UK, and Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, and Georgetown in the USA, found that children with the neurological disorder were faster at assembling sounds into words - the part of language called phonology -than typically developing children. Autism: Disruption of a Uniquely Human Developmental Program
[Source: Medical News Today]

Every time a child or adult learns something new, new contacts form between neurons in the brain. This process (synaptogenesis) is especially active in children during the first 10 years of life. What's more, such long period of active neuronal plasticity is unique to humans as a species: even in some of our closest relatives, chimpanzees and macaques, it ends within several months or a year after birth.

Feds Order State To Comply With Special Ed Laws
The federal government on Monday told Texas state officials that they must eliminate their special education enrollment target unless they can prove that it has not kept children with disabilities from getting services.

The U.S. Department of Education gave the officials a month to either provide the evidence or outline a plan to end so-called "PBMAS Indicator 10," which penalizes school districts that give specialized education to more than 8.5 percent of students.

Concussion Can Now Be Diagnosed with 95% Specificity
[Source: Medical X-Press]

A team of researchers from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has shown that the I-Portal Neuro Otologic Test, which uses the head-mounted goggle that gauged eye movement through video cameras and computers, can successfully diagnose concussion with 95 percent specificity and 89 percent sensitivity. These findings illustrate how use of the I-Portal goggle can better identify oculomotor, vestibular and reaction time (OVRT) differences between those with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and non-affected individuals.

Sensory Corner: Engaging Reluctant Children in Art Play
[Source:  Special-ism]

One of the concerns repeatedly raised by parents is their child's lack of interest and willingness to engage in art play, especially coloring, drawing and beginning writing activities.
Often this is the parent of a child, typically a boy, who is very active, demonstrating greater interest in running, jumping, climbing than in sitting down to draw.

National PT Month-  What does a Pediatric PT Do?
[Source: Beyond Basic Play]

As National Physical Therapy Month continues, I wanted to share details on what a Pediatric Physical Therapist does.  When people ask what I do, and I say that I'm a pediatric physical therapist, I usually get the response, "Kids need PT? For what?!"  When I say I also work with infants/toddlers, people then get thoroughly confused.
