Meet Corey Rogers
North Central STEM Advisory Board Member CoreyR

Corey is a Consultant for School Improvement, with focus areas in STEM, Instructional Technology, Competency Based Education, and Coding at Area Education Agency 267. She is a mentor for the Cedar Valley CoderDojo ( coderdojocv.org), serves on numerous STEM Festival planning committees in northeast Iowa, and will be coaching FLL at Lou Henry Elementary this fall.

Corey earned a B.S. from Grand Valley State University (Allendale, Michigan) in Secondary Education with a Computer Science major and Mathematics minor.  She later earned a M.S. from Concordia University (Ann Arbor, Michigan) in Educational Leadership & Administration.

Corey started her teaching career as a middle school Applied Technology (STEM) teacher in the Detroit suburbs.  Her students researched, designed, and built model bridges & rockets, CO 2 racecars, and Rube Goldberg machines.  She later transitioned to the role of Computer Programming & Applications teacher. Her students learned programming skills with Alice & Scratch, used HTML to design and create web sites, created digital animations and comic strips, and learned basic computing skills.  In 2011, Corey's husband was relocated to Iowa for work.  At that point, she became the Media & Technology Integration Specialist at Bunger Middle School (Waterloo Schools).  Corey focused the majority of her time and energy on supporting teachers with ethical and purposeful technology integration through lesson planning, alignment to district standards/initiatives, and team teaching.

Corey and her husband, Glen, have two kids. Rory, their 9 year-old daughter, and Howard, their 7 year-old son, are both students at Lou Henry Elementary School (Waterloo Schools).  In her free time, Corey enjoys playing board games, doing yoga, spending time with family, friends, & neighbors, and reading.

STEM Council Shows Positive Results in 2015-2016
Iowa STEM Evaluation Report
EvalReport
The Iowa Governor's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Advisory Council shared the results from its 2015-2016 independent evaluation that measures the success of the STEM Council's efforts in advancing STEM education toward economic development across the state.

Highlights of the 306-page Iowa STEM Evaluation Report include:
  • Students who participated in the STEM Scale-Up Program, scored an average of seven percent higher in National Percentile Rank on the Iowa Assessments in mathematics, six percent higher in science and four percent higher in reading.
  • Nine in 10 Iowans thought STEM education should be a priority in their local school districts, but only 46% said it actually is a priority.
  • 46 Corporate Partners contributed $559,239 in 2015-2016, a 20% increase in private investments over 2014-2015.
  • Over 16,000 Iowans were engaged in community STEM festivals in 2015-2016.
  • Scale-up programs impacted over 100,000 PreK-12 youth and their 2,507 educators in 2015-2016.

"This annual report provides vital information for the STEM Council to determine areas of strength for the program as well as areas for improvement," said Kemin Industries President and CEO Dr. Chris Nelson, co-chair of the STEM Council. "The results will shape our programming and develop stronger connections as STEM education efforts continue to move forward in our state."
