Hello!

It appears that fall has arrived. The temperatures are cooler and the green leaves are starting to turn colors. The campus really looks beautiful during October!

There have been a few changes in financial aid and scholarship procedures for the 2017-18 year. This information has been sent to your student, but I want to make sure you're aware of the changes, too.

Financial Aid for 2017-18 School Year

For the 2017-18 school year, students will be able to file their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) beginning October 1, 2016. This is three months earlier than for previous years, and it's a permanent change to the FAFSA process. The goal is to encourage students to file earlier and use the Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) embedded in the FAFSA. By using the DRT, you can immediately transfer your Adjusted Gross Income and taxes paid directly from the IRS database to the FAFSA.

So there's no need to wait until after you file next year's taxes before filing for financial aid. You will use your 2015 tax information to fill out the 2017-18 FAFSA. This should help more people in filing the FAFSA earlier and receiving aid packages sooner from the University. The priority deadline to file the FAFSA for UW Oshkosh financial aid is December 20, 2016.

There will be some financial aid workshops on campus this fall to assist students with the new process. Stay tuned for more information that will be forthcoming from the Financial Aid Office about the opportunities to complete the FAFSA while students are enrolled this fall. If you would like additional information, feel free to contact the Financial Aid Office.

Scholarship Applications for 2017-18

The scholarship application cycle at UW Oshkosh has moved to the fall semester. Students must apply for 2017-2018 scholarships by October 15, 2016. The new system, called Academic Works, has been streamlined, making it easier for students to find and apply for scholarships.

Students should log in and fill out a general application to see which opportunities may be recommended. They will be matched up with scholarships that meet the information entered. Learn more about Academic Works in this article: New one-stop shop to transform UW Oshkosh's scholarship application process.

Academic Information

October - Students who are undecided about their major are urged to spend time in October exploring and researching their interests and possible options. Recommended resources and activities can be found here.

October 3 - Registration for spring semester starts. Honors students and some athletes are able to register the first week; most other first year students will register in November. Students should contact the Undergraduate Advising Resource Center (UARC) one month prior to their registration date (posted in TitanWeb) to schedule a time to meet with their academic advisor. They can either call (920) 424-1268 or stop by their office in the Student Success Center, Suite 202, to make an appointment.

October 12 - Early Alerts are sent out. Emails are sent to students letting them know how they are doing in their 14-week classes. It includes information about the many academic resources available to help them. Students should follow up with their instructor if they are not doing well.

October 21 - Last day to drop a 14-week course. If a student is considering dropping a class, have them stop by the Student Accounts Office in Dempsey 236 to see if there will be a financial impact.

Online course for first-year students

Your student recently received an email from a company called CampusClarity. It includes a link to an innovative, engaging and informative online course, created with students for students. In the course, students will examine the interconnected issues of hooking up, substance abuse, sexual violence and healthy relationships through a variety of interactive, realistic scenarios and guided self-reflection. The course promotes a healthier and safer campus environment for everyone. We're asking students to complete this course no later than Tuesday, October 25.

Live-in Requirement for freshmen and sophomores

Students have started to get information from off-campus landlords about places to live for next year. I just wanted to remind you that most freshmen and sophomores are required to live in the residence halls unless they live within the 45 mile commuter range and are commuting from their parent's/legal guardian's permanent home (due to the Wisconsin Board of Regents' Housing Policy).

UW Oshkosh will exempt anyone if one or more of the following are true by the first day of a fall semester:
  • They are married
  • They are at least 21 years of age
  • They have successfully earned at least 48 credits
  • They have lived in a residence hall for four semesters
Election Day is a month away

November brings the Presidential Election on November 8. We've been assisting students by setting up a variety of places on campus where they can register to vote in Wisconsin prior to Election Day. We're hoping that by registering early, the registration lines will be shorter on the 6. We will continue to have voter registration on campus through October 18. The dates and locations will be emailed to students.

Students will need to have a picture ID to vote on November 8. A WI drivers' license, WI DOT-issued ID, military ID or U.S. Passport will work for this. If they don't have any of these, students may go to Titan Central in Reeve Union to get a free Voter ID Card. They will need to bring their UW Oshkosh Titancard to get their Voter ID card (NOTE: their Titancard doesn't work for voting). The official website for WI voting information is:   myvote.wi.gov.

I hope you have a great month!
