Message from Dr. Rose Mary Shaw,
Director of the Mindfully Well Center
Welcome Autumn: Vata
Season of Transitions!
Please join me in greeting the Autumn season, the time of transition between the heat of the summer and the cold dry winter days. According to Ayurveda, it is particularly important to increase our awareness of our lifestyle and daily routines (dinacharya), as we monitor the changes in our external environment. As we attune to the changes of nature, we too can experience our own metamorphosis.  The first step is to make a commitment to your self-care, the next step is to take action and enter the door. The Mindfully Well Center will take care of the rest.

Below, we present various tips for managing your Vata as we naturally cool the accumulation of the summer heat of Pitta and gently warm you as we move into  the cooler, dry season.

We have just added a 3-day Detox & Rejuvenation Program. This will allow you to take time to care for self and still tend to your work and family duties.
We invite you to enjoy this and our other Fall programs.

Be Well my friends!
Stay out of the blustery winds & enjoy the peace of the Fall Colors!

Someone Alone Looking at the Mountain

All the birds have flown up and gone;
Lonely cloud floats leisurely by.
We never tire of looking at each other -
Only the mountain and I.

Nutrition: Warming Fall Suggestions

Autumn season brings dryness, deficiency and change.

Ayurveda offers food  advice aimed at nourishing and building.
They serve to restore deficient tissues and
thicken the skin, thus insulate you from the cold.
Overall warm, heavy, oily foods build Ojas and prepare the body reserves for cold winter.

Recommended foods for balancing Vata  include
(1) sweet, sour and salty taste-
such as rice & organic wheat products
         . . . bulgar, chapati, couscous,

(2) warming foods such as carrots, beets, hard winter squash, sweet potatoes            . . .  especially when made into soups

(3) nuts such as almonds. cashews and pistachios

(4) warm milk, paneer, lassi, honey,

(5) warming oils such as ghee and olive oil

(6) warm breakfast foods such as oatmeal

Recommended foods to avoid that aggravate Vata:

(1) dry foods such as dry cereals and cold salads

(2) Dehydrated foods are fine if soaked, such as raisins & dates

(3) cold salads & raw vegetables

(4) iced foods and drinks

(5) avoid most beans  acceptable beans include mung dahl, and green beans

An ayurvedic practitioner can help you design an individualized plan to address your specific needs and address your current imbalances.
