 Commentary: Installation Labor and Investing in the Future
Garmin's Jim Alpiser opined in this month's Avionics News on the issue of installation labor. He wrote: "Aircraft owners are busy organizing their thoughts for avionics upgrades, both big and small. With the upcoming requirement for ADS-B Out at the end of 2019, many are choosing to make other avionics improvements at the same time. The pragmatic aircraft owner will want nothing short of the highest-quality installation. This is where you as an avionics shop come in.
"Quality avionics installations are an investment. Aircraft owners want it done right the first time and for the installation to last service free for a long time. Working in the avionics industry requires an incredible amount of knowledge and infrastructure. You've invested in education, training, facilities, test equipment, tools and insurance. And the list goes on.
"From my vantage point, working in the avionics industry is one of the most technically challenging endeavors out there. So how do our professional service prices compare to other industries? You might be surprised."

BREXIT: What does it Mean for Aviation?
Mostly, at this point, a lot of questions. One issue is that the FAA/EASA Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement is not between the FAA and the EASA, but rather between the United States and the European Union. As such, when Great Britain secedes from the European Union, it will no longer be covered under the U.S./EU BASA. It may choose to remain an EASA signatory, which will smooth any pan-European issues; however, it will need its own U.S./GB BASA, similar to the agreement between the U.S. and Switzerland.
At this point, it is too early to speculate; however, the AEA is watching the events unfold with a keen eye toward their affect on aviation

This event takes place at the Embassy Suites at KCI, and on-site registrations will be accepted.
Free AET certification testing will be available to registered attendees at this event.
An optional Safety Management Systems training course for SMS coordinators will take place one day prior to the start of the event on Oct. 4.

Attendees should register in advance prior to Oct. 10 for this event at the Sheraton Cavalier Calgary Hotel.
While Ottawa struggles with the unknown of severe budget issues and austerity measures, there have been a fairly significant series of issues that affect every shop. Adding to the Canadian specific regulatory issues, this session will highlight the expanding global marketplace through revisions to bilateral aviation safety agreements, and the ADS-B requirement for all aircraft flying transoceanic or south of the 49th parallel.

Safety Management System Coordinator Training:
Oct. 4
More and more customers and international authorities are asking for safety management systems from Aircraft Electronics Association members. To satisfy their needs, the AEA has developed a proprietary SMS program designed for maintenance organizations, sized for small businesses and leveraged by the 900-strong repair station membership. This program has been coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration and Transport Canada Civil Aviation, as well as discussions with the Australian government's Civil Aviation Safety Authority and the European Aviation Safety Agency for future acceptance.
Presented by Ric Peri, AEA vice president of government and industry affairs, the
training will provide a solid overview of modern safety principles, the International Civil Aviation Organization guidance on SMS implementation and the use and operation of the proprietary AEA SMS program.
This training program is mandatory for a repair station's accountable manager or SMS coordinator (if designated) in order to enroll a repair station in the AEA SMS program

International Rotorcraft Safety Conference:
Oct. 25-27
The FAA Rotorcraft Directorate will host its second International Rotorcraft Safety Conference, Oct. 25-27, with the goal to reduce the national helicopter accident rate. FAA Administrator Michael Huerta is expected to attend the first day of the conference. The free event will take place at the Hurst Conference Center near Ft. Worth, Texas. The target audience is rotorcraft pilots, mechanics, small-company owners, students, industry executives, operators, and government regulators from the U.S. and abroad. The conference will feature presentations from major industry and FAA leaders. Topics include improving decisions, creating a culture of safety, performing autorotations, choosing the best protection equipment, basic helicopter safety and maintenance, how flight training schools promote safety, and a presentation by a pilot who safely landed his helicopter after the engine failed. The FAA Civil Aerospace Medical Institute will bring its Helicopter Spatial Disorientation Demonstration exhibit that allows participants to experience various flight scenarios. Conference attendees will receive Inspection Authorization credits and WINGS pilot proficiency program credits.

completed an ADS-B compliant, Garmin touchscreen avionics upgrade on a 1998 Citation CJ1 (525).
FLIGHTSAFETY INTERNATIONAL promoted BRADY PEIKERT to assistant manager of the Learning Center in Orlando, Florida, and WILLY VARGAS to director of sales for Latin America and the Caribbean. And the company's chairman, president and CEO, BRUCE WHITMAN, was selected to receive the NBAA American Spirit Award in recognition of his commitment to helping others throughout the global aviation community.
AERO DYNAMIX was selected by Air Medical Resources Group as the preferred NVIS solution provider on its EMS rotorcraft.
ASTRONAUTICS CORPORATION OF AMERICA was selected by the FAA to research and develop a comprehensive approach to identify and assess potential aircraft cybersecurity threats as they relate to aircraft certification and continued operational safety.
DUNCAN AVIATION named TRAVIS GRIMSLEY manager of customer service at the company's Battle Creek, Michigan, facility. In addition, the company's in-house design team recently completed five designs created specifically for the owner-flown Citation CJ3 aircraft.
WEST STAR AVIATION announced FAA approval on its Lear 60 FANS STC. West Star teamed with Universal Avionics and TrueNorth Avionics to offer this new FANS solution for the Lear 60.
CLAY LACY AVIATION united with Key Air to expand nationwide coverage for jet charter, aircraft management and maintenance support with new locations in Greater New York and throughout the Northeast.
TRUENORTH AVIONICS unveiled its latest cabin communications system, Simphonē Pro, with a special upgrade program for legacy Simphonē product owners. The new product delivers all the capabilities of the older systems with added performance and value, according to the company.
SATCOM DIRECT acquired AircraftLogs (Stewart-Ratliff Aviation Services Inc.) of Columbus, Ohio, that offers the latest technology in aircraft flight scheduling software and tax reporting tools for corporate and private flight departments.
STANDARDAERO Business Aviation completed and delivered the company's first Dassault Falcon 7X 1C inspection from its Springfield, Illinois, MRO facility on Aug. 19.
GLOBALPARTS.AERO now offers structural removal and reinstallation through its partnership with Turbine Aircraft Services.
ELLIOTT AVIATION started its second full 400E interior retrofit that includes Garmin G5000 touch screen avionics. The first installation was completed on an aircraft purchased by the company's aircraft sales division, Elliott Jets, and was sold on Sept. 12, 2016.
ROCKWELL COLLINS was selected by Boeing to provide touchscreen flight displays for all five flight deck displays on the new Boeing 777X. In addition, Rockwell Collins and Stellar partnered to develop a flight operations management platform for business aviation.
JEPPESEN agreed to issue the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid an educational license to use its Total Airspace and Airport Modeler software to enhance graduate-level research related to the study of air traffic management within its Department of Bioengineering and Aerospace Engineering.
WESTERN AIRCRAFT announced that Textron Aviation Inc. has designated it as an authorized service facility for several models across the Beechcraft and Cessna platforms.
THOMAS GLOBAL SYSTEMS received an FAA STC for its TFD-8601 Electronic Flight Instrument System upgrade on Embraer EMB 120 aircraft.
