MAKING THE EMPLOYER CONNECTION
HOW DO YOU MEASURE THE IMPACT OF YOUR EMPLOYER INITIATIVES?

You start a training program or some other initiative with employers.  How do you go in-depth to measure, not just the outcomes, but also the real impact of your work on the business?  Workforce programs rarely conduct this kind of analysis, but it is very important to do.  It can show you how to deepen your impact so your work is truly transformative in the way the company and you work together.  This kind of assessment can help you make a strong business case with other employers and funding sources about the value of your business services.  You can start to put a real value on your work with businesses, which will help you in marketing fee-for-service solutions to companies.  This report will show you how to measure the impact of your employer initiatives.  Click here to read the report.

ON THE CUTTING EDGE WITH MY CLIENTS
NEW DOOR VENTURES

New Door Ventures prepares disconnected youth for work and life. We provide skill-building, individual support and jobs that enable our youth to discover and achieve their potential. Our work is integral to their successful transition to healthy, sustainable adulthood. We aim to transform individuals who will in turn transform their communities.  This description of New Door Ventures from their website is a brief introduction to what happens in this dynamic, effective and innovative youth workforce development program.

I strongly encourage you to explore their website so you can appreciate the impressive scope and impact of their work.  Under the leadership of their visionary management team, that includes Executive Director Tess Reynolds and Program Manager Ciara Wade and with an exemplary staff, they have achieved outstanding results with a very challenging population of youth.  New Door Ventures is an excellent example of a mission driven program that is in a perpetual state of improvement and experimentation.  What is equally impressive is how they consistently, objectively and rigorously evaluate the success of their efforts.  There is a depth in the way they work on program development and with their youth that I do not see in many programs.  Over the years, I have consulted with New Door management and many of their staff and management have come to my training sessions.

They run two social enterprises, Pedal Revolution, which is a bicycle sales, rental and repair shop and Ashbury Images, a screen printing company.  I asked Ciara Wade to write an article about this aspect of their organization.  I know that you will learn a lot from their experience and her insights.  Click here to read the article.  For information on the training and consulting I provide for youth programs, click here.

WHAT DO EMPLOYERS THINK ABOUT HIRING
MENTAL HEALTH CONSUMERS WITH CRIMINAL HISTORIES?

Twelve employment specialists from the Johnson & Johnson-Dartmouth Community Mental Health Program were nominated, because of their excellent job performance, to participate in a project designed to learn how to assist people who have both criminal histories and serious mental illness. The employment specialists conducted employer surveys in their home states and then met with members of the Dartmouth team to discuss the results of the surveys. This report represents 128 surveys.  While we know that this is a small sampling and that the employers may not have shared all their insights and feelings about this topic, this unique survey still provides us with valuable information that will have an impact on consumers and the people that work with them to help find employment.  I provide training and consulting for mental heath programs that want to help consumers improve their employment outcomes.  Click here for information about my mental health employment services.  Click here to read the survey.

WHAT ARE THE SALARIES YOU CAN EXPECT EARN
FROM DIFFERENT COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES?

Sometimes when we talk about helping our program participants go to college, we focus on the area of study and career pathway as if that alone will determine their future earnings.  The truth is that what is also very important (and sometimes more important) is what college or university they go to in order to pursue that career pathway.  This amazing report, Ranking Your College and What You Will Make, analyzes how majors, schools and other factors influence earnings.  This is a must read for anyone that is involved with helping people further their education as an income advancement strategy.  Click here for the report.
