A Message from the Dean...
It's My Money
"You cannot serve God and wealth." -Luke 16:13

In the 1980s Bill Cosby was featured in ten commercials for E.F. Hutton, the stock brokerage company, telling people all the reasons he trusted E.F. Hutton, ending each one with the gripping phrase, "E.F. Hutton-because it's my money."
Really? Our Gospel reading calls this into question. Is it my money? Jesus tells us in our Gospel reading, it is not my money.
It is not my money. Money is not a possession; it is a trust. In this passage, money-or wealth, as the NRSV translates it-points beyond itself: what is ultimately important in our life? For many people it is not so much the accumulation of money for its own sake. Rather, the accumulation of money allows us to feel secure. To feel safe.
The challenge that Jesus issues goes all the way back to Job: are material blessings a sign that God has blessed us? And, conversely, is poverty an indication that we are not approved by God?  When Job's health failed and his wealth disappeared, his friends told him that he must have done something that displeased God.
There is no evidence that Job displeased God. In fact, when Job's family and wealth were restored to him, God told those friends to ask Job to pray for them.
Mother Teresa once said, "If Jesus puts you in the palace, be all for Jesus in the palace, and if he takes your life and cuts it up into 1,000 pieces, they are all his." Mother Teresa had answered the question of who is Lord of her life. It is a question that each of us must face. It's really not about the money.
